CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Renewal of Infavorahle Conditions For
naming (ilvea Corn I nrtslnsr.
Chicago, May 24. Renewed unfavorable
conditions for planting brought about ad
vances today In the oorn market Price
closed unsettled, to lo nt hlghr with
June $1.38 and July $1.40. Oats gained
H 10 a net. Declines of 27e to $1 took
pise in provisions
Unwelcome wet weather proved to bs ths
dominating Influence affocting ths value
of corn. Delay to plsntlng was reported
from a number of districts, and It was said
ths result would be to defer the expected
aiter-pianung movement of grain. 1m
portent sections of Illinois and Ohio were
particularly mentioned In this connection.
One dispatch from Ohio sent by a leading
Chicago crop expert attracted especial
notice. He asserted that ths heavy rains
had caused widespread retardation of seed
ing, and that there whs a large area yet to
plant. On the other hand, good authorities
said that barring persistant downpours there
was still ample time. Bearish reactions,
however, failed to last.
Oats sympathised with th advance In
corn. Trad waa mostly of an evening up
character on the part of shorts. Exporters
wore bidding, but they were much below
a working basis
Lower quotations on hogs wsakensd pro
visions. Considerable of th selling ap
peared to com from outside packers.
Brwdatrv-et's Trade Review.
New Ycrk, May 24. TlKhtenlng of con
ditions In nonessential lines, further speed
up of war work, excellent crops news and
rerorts that large distributors ars selling
all the goods they can get after govern,
mental requirements ars satisfied, comprise
the mainsprings of the week's events.
Because of a paucity of supplies at a
tlms when shelves are being cleaned out
of medium priced goods as ths result of
heavy buying flowing from abnormally high
wages, linked, too, with concsrn sbout th
llklihood of being unable to cover future
requirements, future purveyors are buying
liberally and aa often as opportunity offers.
Yet It must be recognised thst th short
ages of merchandise plus the fact that or
dinary business Is being gradually side
tracked to ear for government orders, op
erates to lay checkrelns on normal move
ments to superlnduc closer terms of credit,
enhance profits of those who may have
free supplies, to creats an air ot unwonted
activity at a season that Is ordlnsrlly
marked by btwen-season characteristics,
and to give mor than due prominence to
demand for goods as distinguished from
actual ability to got supplies.
