The lieutenant said: - " "We landed in France last Decem ber and. after three days, arrived at a splendid group of French barracks. They -were large store buildings situ- acta on vie top or a nm. tne sur rounding country was rather hilly and covered with timber. We had very little .enow and cold weather in France this past winter. "The target range was about IS kilometers long by '10 wide, so . we had plenty of room to fire even the bug gun's with which my regiment is eauiooed. The men must get their dugouts fixed' up, also their kitchens and ammunition dumps. , , -"The lines. of communication must - fee organized. In our present loca tion my own battalion has 30 kilo meters of telearraoh line, and the po sitions of the batteries and all their observatories must be accurately lo cated on the map, "After we are once settled down we haven't anything to do except bother the boche by killing them or knocking down the house from over their heads.; I have seen several air bat tles, but so far it has always been the boche who crashed down on the hard rocks. Two carloads of hogs from Scrib ner and Central City were sold at the South Side market Saturday, the pro ceeds going to the local chapters of the Red Cross. The Scribner load of 57 head weighed 12,520 pounds and was sold by the Great Western Commission company to Armour a Co. for $16.90 per 100 pounds, netting $2,085.25. The Central City load of 42 heacT weighed 8,620 pounds and was sold by the In terstate Commission company to Armour & Co. for $17.10, per 100 pounds, netting $1,474.02. ' The commission companies handled the shipments free of charge. ' Since February 21 the proceeds from the sale of Red Cross hegs have amounted to $186,300. CLOTUEERULE TO LIMIT SENATE DEBATE PROPOSED i m , n Washington, May 4. Less debate in the senate during the war is pro posed in a resolution introduced to day by Senator Underwood of Ala bama, reported to have considerable support. As a substitute for the present cloture rule permitting two thirds of the senate to limit a sen ator's argument to one hour pending legislation, Senator Underwood's res olution would give a majority power to invoke cloture by limiting debate after a subject has been discussed wo days to twenty minutes on the bill itself and ten minutes on amend ments. The rule will.be operative only during the war. South Side Youngsters Stage Benefit "Show" for Red Cross " Six South Side girls and two Boys, ranging in age from 9 to 15 years, staged a, "show" of their own com position at the home of M. A. Gillen 5129 South Twenty-ninth street, last Sunday, and turned the proceeds of $5.15 over to the Red Cross. The "show" cosisted of dialogues, vaudeville sketches, music and a tableau. William Gillen. 11 vears old. a pupil of St. John's school, was the "four Minute" speaker, and gave a iMK ot hs own composition. Xlaude McCoullough was employed as "stage manager." Drastic checks on industrial fuel consumption are under consideration by the fuel administration. P. E.. Noyes, director of conservation, "plans to have inspec tors in industrial plants to snpervjse the use of coal. Fuel administration officials say enormous amounts of coal are wasted through inefficient firing and obsolete equipment. Mr. Noyes appeared today before the house appropriations comrrlittee and asked $1,500,000 for the inspec tion service. Hhis plans contemplate the rating of plants on their boiler efficiency for the, delivery of coal. Plants wasting coal will be required to take corrective measures, or their coal supply may be cut off.
