Hogs On a supply of 17,600 head or !50
cars, the market opened fairly active, al
though early bids were 10c lower than yes
terday's close snd all of 26o lower than
yesterday's early market. A fair clearance
had been msdo on the rather hoavy run
around 10 o'clock and Indications were that
the remaining loads still In first hands
might sell at a little better figures than
the eHi-ly trade. Bulk of the sales ranged
from $16.65 to 316.85, and for the best light
weight shippers paid as high as $17.05,
which Is 20a under yesterday's top. Gen
erally speaking the day's trade will aver
age 20c lower than yesterday.
Sheep Sheep arrivals today amounted to
22 loads, estimated at 6,300 head, making a
total for the three days 19,764. There was
a little better feeling In the sheep market
this morning, than for the last few days.
While few early sales had been reported,
there appeared to be more activity. Three
cars of western lambs sold at 320.00. The
prospects were that the market would be
steady to strong, and posHlbly a trifle higher'

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Corn and Onto Prices Tumble Owing to
General liquidation.
Chicago, May 1. Corn prices tumbled
today owing to general liquidation brought
on largely by reports that the cast wss
offering to resell cash grain and by fresh
gossip regsrdlng peace. The market rinsed
weak at the same as yesterday's finish to
mo lower, with May $1.87H and July
31.45S01.45V. Oats lost 114 to 114 1140.
In provisions there was an advance of 12o
to 40c.
At the outset, new developments touching
peace eirorts gave considerable Impulse to
selling of corn, and so too did warmer
weather that pointed to Increased planting.
Assertions later that receipts at Kansas City
and St. Louis would be light from now on
led to a moderate rally, but before midday
the selling broadened again and weakness
became acute In the last hour. Optlmlstlo
forecasts of a huge wheat crop '.his sesson
appeared to have a good deal to do with
the readiness said to he shown by the east
to dispose of holdings. In this conneotlnn
there were likewise reports that big quan
tises of Cansdian oats were headed to the
s board.
Oats were ruled by the same factors which
governed corn.
Provisions went up grade chiefly on the
knowledge that May deliveries of lard.
aggregating 1,000,000 pounds, had gone into
strong hands.
