INDIAN I C. RIDES
THRICE INTO THE
JAWSJF DEATH
Jemadar Gobind Singh has Suc
cessful Mission in London on
Leave From West
Battle Front.
St. Nlhal Singh, In London Dally Ctirontcta
The latest Indian V. C, Jemadar
Lieutenant Gobind Singh, haj been
visiting London on short leave from
the western theater of war, where
his cavalry regiment is at present sta
tioned, and where he earned the cov
eted distin:t;on.
Rather thin and quite tall for a
Rajput, Jenndar Gobind Singh has
the clear-cut, intelligent features of
the Indo-Aryans, among whom his
clan of Ratiiorcs, with his highness
the Maharaja of Marwar (Jodhpur)
at its head, ranks high for the right
ing and administrative qualities of its
members. He spoke to me in simple
Hindi the principal derivative of
ancient Sanskrit jerking out his sen
tences in soidicr fashion.
The squadron to which he is at
present attached, through the good
offices of Lieutenant General His
Highness Maharaja Sir Pcrtali Singh,
who, in conversation with . me, re
ferred to Gobind Singh as "my boy,",
found itself completely cut off from
the armies . perating against the Ger
mans during the recent push , at
Cambrai. Encircled by the enemy on
three sides, with a stream canal on
the fourth, the men dug themselves
in, determined to give the Huns a
hot time.
Aska For Volunteer.
The oftker in command, finding it
imperative tj get into communication
witji the general staff, asked for a '
volunteer to carry his dispatch, To
go by the stream route was out of the
question. The only alternative : was' .
to brave the enemy fire over a dis
tance of a mile and a half.
Mounted on his horse, an Indian
fared forth into "No . Mail's Land."
He had not gone very far when Gcr-,
man bullets struck down him and his
horse. One after another other In
dians followed this volunteer and
shared his fate.
Gobind Singh, then a lance-dafadar
(lance sergeant), was among the men
who saw1 the orderlies shot down by
the ehetny. His Rathore blood boiled'
in him, and lie asked the commander
to let him try his luck. Mounted on
his charge he galloped at f tilt speed
into "No Man's Land" and mad
straight for his objective. The Ger
man machine guns riddled his horse's
body, descrining with their bullets, on
either side of the animal, a curve the
shape of his leg, not far from where;
it hung down from the saddle. His
horse fell under him, but the brave
Rathore escaped unhurt, and com
pleted on foot the 600 yards of his
journey that remained.
The Return Journey.
The reply to be carried back to thi
trench, over the mile and a half stretch
raked by German bullets, Gobind
Singo offered to take it back. Mounted
on the horse that belonged to the,
general's orderly he sallied forth on
the return journey. He was instantly
greeted by heavy machine gun fire,
about half way across "No Man's
Land," his horse well under him, and
he ran for dear life. The Germans
gave chase, firing afl the time, Gobind
Singh kept well ahead of them, and
after a few moments that seemed ar,
eternity counter fire from the isolated
Indian squadron stopped the pursuers
and he jumped into the trench, pnc
more naving soccessmuy Dwiofnlcd
his mission. ' ' - :.' "
he dispatch tfiat'he brought required
a reply. His offer to ride through the
Valley of the Shadow of Death for the
third time was accepted. He was given ;
leave to choose any horse that lie
wanted, and brave hearts wished him
God-speed to their comrades, whp
they had come to bvelieve bore a
charmed life. ,
When Gobind Singh -galloped jnta
"No Mans'. Land" he missed the usual
German greeting of machine gun fire.
Not a bullet whizzed past him; .-.-Few
all the noise that was being made,
the German trench might have been
empty. ...
Meant Certain Death.
He must have covered half his mile-and-a-hllf
flight when he discovered
the German game. Their big gum
suduenly began to thunder forth, jcre
atirg in front of him a wall of burst
ing shells;. '
A British gunner who was shelter
ing in a shell .hole told him that to
attempt to ride through that barrage
meant certain death. , Gobind Singh
replied that he did not mind risking
his life for the success of his rnis
sion, and he charged the wall Of fire
Just then a shell fell on the horse
that the Indian was riding. His hind
quarters' were blown to atoms. V
The shock did not render him sense
less, but the sight of the horse's blood,
with which he was covered, made hinj
think he had been mortally wounded."
Convinced that hp could not run he
slowly walked the 200 yards or so that
still stretched' before him,, the Gett'
mans constantly firing at htm. '
On arriving at headquarters, Gobind
Singh discovered that he had.corpe
unscathed for the third time out of
the jaws of death. The surgeon" who
examined him found that he had 'not
suffered a scratch. - : '! - '.-
The general found his spirits as high
as ever. He asked if there wast, an
other message to be sent, and declared
that he was willing to take it through
the German lines if thatwere nects
sary. It only remains to add that soon
afterwards our afmics, pushing from
behind, dislodged the Germans-;froi
their positions and rescued the Im'
dian cavalry thatiiad been isolated, "i
