Trade opened out very slow, with bids and sales anywhere from 10 0 36c lower than Wednesday's early market. Demand was fairly broad, but bad reports from eastern markets and difficulty In securing stock and refrigerator oara had a depressing Influence throughout the day. Brunt of the decline fell on the medium steers and on butcher and canner stock. In stockers and feeders there was also a very weak fellng, and only the best grades commanded steady figures. The general market was fully 36o lower than Monday. MEW YORK STOCKS Session Is Marked by Slug gish Trading, Only. Quicken ing Small Fraction Near Close of Day. New York, Feb. II. The stock market moved in aimless and perfunctory fashion during the greater part of today s lrregu lar session, quickening Its pace slightly towards the close on a moderate Inquiry for rails. Progress of the govesment rail way control legislation was probably a help ful factor, together with prospects of better earnings. Pools continued their Intermittent ac tivities In numerous specialties, but the trend in that quarter waa far from uniform, secondary Issues scoring 1 to t point gains, while seasoned shares reacted 1 to 1 points. Standard Industrials, comprising the ateel division, were under constant restraint. mainly because of the uncertain attitude of the government respecting prevailing price schedules. A marked falling off In domestic orders was reported by many of the Important ateel and Iron manufacturers, who are to meet here tomorrow. United 8tatea Steel fluotu ated within a 1 point range and waa under greatest pressure In the laat hour, though yielding only a slight fraction. The stock sella minus Its regular and "extra" dlvl- dends of 414 per cent tomorrow. Not until the market's close was an nouncement made that the directors of the St. Paul railway had again failed to take action en the common and preferred divi dends. Roth Issues were firm to strong, after early heaviness In the preferred. Sales amounted to (10,000 ahares. Bonds ef the speculative claes were again Inclined to ease, but Investments held firm. Liberty first and seconds 4s reacted, while the 3 Ha made a slight gain. Total sales, par value, aggregated $3,860,000. U. S., old Issues, were unchanged on call.
