FIGHT TO LAND
CAMP CONTRACTS
Genera! Goethals Issues Orders
to Quartermaster to Invite
Gate City Merchants to
Make Bids.
Omaha merchants again will bid on
contracts to furnish Camp Dodge at
Des Moines with supplies.
For more than a month Omaha
merchants have been ignored by the
quartermaster at Chicago in asking
for bids on these contracts.
The Omaha Chamber of Commerce
jumped into the breach, telegraphed
Nebraska senators at Washington to
get busy, and the result is that Omaha
merchants again are recognized.
Advices from Washington say Gen
eral Goethals has issued a general
order to the quartermaster at Chicago
instructing him to invite Omaha mer
chants to bid on the contracts.
Up to a month or more ago, Camp
Dodge was supplied largely through
the Omaha quartermaster. Then this
was changed and the camp is supplied
from Chicago.
Omaha Shut Out.
Whert this change came about,
Omaha merchants no longer were
permitted to bid on contracts to fur
nish subsistence for the camp. It was
known that Omaha had been able to
make the government better prices
on supplies than many of the cities
even much nearer the camp and aided
by freight rates.
Why then Omaha should be cut out
of the running was not understood
here, and it was then that the Cham
ber of Commerce made the wires hot
to Washington.
It is now given out from Washing
ton that the order of General Goethals
of some time ago ordering the camp
supplied from the Chicago depot in
stead 6i from the Omaha was misun
derstood by officials at the Chicago
quartermaster depot to mean that
Omaha merchants should no longer
bid.
The new order of General Goethals
puts the situation back where it was
a month ago when Omaha firms were
furnishing a large part of the supplies
for the big cantonment. In other
words, Omaha becomes an open mar
ket for supplies for Camp Dodge.
Citizens Petition Council to
Repair Florence Boulevard
Citizens of the north part of the
city are circulating a petition in
which they ask the city council to
repair that portion of the Florence
boulevard north of Redick avenue and
put it in passable condition.
At this time, on account of the ruts
and holes in the wearing surface, the
Florence boulevard, from Redick ave
nue north, is said to be as full of
holes and as rough as a corduroy
road. At the north end of the boule
vard there is a pile of several hun
dred; loads of cinders and it is con
tended that if these were hauled out
and scattered over the driveway it
could, easily be put in first-class condition.
Hupmobile Motors Furnish

been using coal almost entirely for

has been produced by Hupmobile
motors."
