About one year ago the Industrial Depart
ment of the Commercial Club repeatedly
called attention to the fact that Omaha was
in need of a malleable iron foundry and a
vast amount of correspondence was carried on
for several months with prominent and ex
perienced malleable foundry managers. The
need of a foundry of this kind in Omaha has
not diminished, however, but on the contrary
has grown more pronounced, for the reason
that malleable iron foundries in Iowa, Illinois
and other states east of here have gotten far.

seem to be getting worse from month to
month. It appears probable, however, that
steps will soon be taken by Omaha men to
organize a company for the purpose of build
ing and equipping a foundry that will supply
the machine shops and manufacturers of this
locality with malleable iron parts and thus
facilitate a vast amount of work which is
now badly handicapped by long and exasperat
ing delays. The establishment of a malleable
iron foundry in Omaha will require consider
able capital and its success will require good

More than 10,000 tons of Malleable Cast Busi
ness goes annually from Omaha to Kansas City,
Chicago and St. Louis. The only Malleable Foun
dry between these points and the coast is located
at Fairfield, Iowa, with only very limited capacity.
Up until December, 1917, Malleable Cast had been
quoted at $12.50 per. hundred. The latest quota
tions are $25.00 per hundred. Mr. C. A. Hardy,
sales manager for the Whiteing Foundry Com
pany, ofHarvey, HI., is authority.for the state
ment, figuring the maximum cost of all materials
in a plant with a capacity of ten tons per day, Mal
leable can be manufactured at a net cost of $166.00
per ton. ,
