The market presented no new featurse, and for the most part beef steers and cows sold In about the same .notches as on Tuesday's early trade. De mand seemed to be a lltle broader, and as supplies were limited the movement was fairly active and prices anywhere from steady to a shade lower on both beef steers and butcher stock. Chicago, Feb. 87, Hardening of grain values today accompanied a cessation of peace gossip.. Corn closed steady at a net advance of a shads, with March $1.37 and May $1.26 1.27. Oat gained c Provisions finished 2027o down. Subsidence of talk about a possibility of the von Hertllng address affording some prospect of an early end of hostilities put the bears at a disadvantage In the corn market throughout the day., Values were strengthened b:' notice from the directors of ths exchsnga that further trading In the February delivery had been prohibited and that settlements would have to be made at the maximum prlco allowed for futures, $1.2$ a bushel. In the late dealings, hew ever, the fact that the weather was excel lent for a heavy movement of corn from rural sources to primary centers acted as a weight on pi Ices. Ths likelihood of a falling off In receipts tended to stimulate demand for oats. It was said producers and railroads were both giving preference to the handling of corn. Sharp breaks In ths pries of hogs weak ened provisions. Much sslllng was also caused by a report that ths government al lotment of March rontracts had been of less volume than expected.
