Even more rapid than the growth of the automobile
industry itself has been the phenomenal growth of the
automobile accessory business, not only in Omaha, but the
entire country.
When the motor car made its first appearance on the
market little attention was given accessories and equip
ment. The purchaser of an automobile had to be content
with what equipment was furnished with the car. When
that equipment began to feel the effect of age and wear,
he was practically helpless tor repair it.
After a few years, accessories began to make their
appearance on the market, but they were given subsidiary
consideration. Ordinarily, the dealer alone handled ac
cessories and only those accessories to equip the particular
cars he handled. Then came the garage and with the
garage the accessory industry began to grow.
Soon the exclusive accessory dealer made his appeai
ance and insofar as it was possible he handled accessories,
and equipment for all makes and models of cars.
First Accessory House.
But even then the accessory business was given sew
ondary rank and it has only been in the last decade that
the accessory business has been given conscientious con
sideration and importance. In fact it was not until 1907
that the first exclusive accessory house was opened in
Omaha. Clarke G. Powell, one of Omaha's pioneers, saw
the importance of the accessory and he established the
company which he now heads. Now Mr. Powell has many
competitors in his line.
Now accessory manufacturers in the United States
number almost as many as there are automobile mam
facturers. These accessory men have employed the same
inventive genius which has characterized the work of the
automobile men with the result that many of the modern
conveniences of motoring first appeared through accessory
houses and today are purchasable only in this manner.
Almost every convenience for the motorist now is af
forded the public through the accessory dealers. So com
plete has become the accessory lines that a motorist in
these modern days can expend almost as much for acces
sories of improvement as the original sales price of the car

Further has the accessory been an aid in the develop
ment of the motor car industry in that it has relieved the
automobile dealer from many of the worries and responsi
bilities he formerly was forced to contend with. For in-
