EW YORK manager! are
TVT I preparing for the "spring
111 I drive" at the theaters, and
1 1 .. . c i
inis involves more vi rcai
interest to the managers
whose houses lie on this
side of the Hudson river. Greatest
of all factors in the present situation
is the breach between the Shuberts
ana tne a.. c. comDinauon; tnis
division has resulted in a new align
ment of interests, and in the read
justment the Shuberts seem to have
the better of the deal. At least the
more active producers have taken
their stand under the Shubert ban
ner, and are sending afield more and
better companies than have toured
in some time. In Omaha the effect
is that the Boyd theater has a fairly
solid list of booking, extending
through the coming month, with con
tracts that lead up well to the end
of April, and time asked for through
May and into June. These are all
"Shubert" attractions and of first-class
quality. On the other hand, no an
nouncements are made from the "K.
& E." end for Omaha, and, while the
Brandeis is available for their shows,
the Hippodrome vaudeville, now so
successful there, is not likely to be
frequently disturbed. In New York
the prediction is made that Cohan &
Harris will join forces with the Shu
berts, and the opinion seems to be
that the policy of this combination
is more popular than of its older op
ponent It does not so much concern
the public, which at no time is in
clined to scan the label; what the peo-
nle out thia viv rrallv ar intrrati.d
ducing it. Omaha had Otis Skinner
under Klaw & Erlanger auspices, and
"You're in Love" and "Love o
Mike" under the Shubert direction,
and enjoyed them all. In the mean
time vaudeville, musical burlesque
and the movies are getting patron-'f
age at a rate tnat enables the manag
ers to lay down considerable sums of
war tax collections each week, anu
none are worrying especially ovfr the
quarrels of the Broadway magnates
Manager Burgess announces the
following high-class attractions for
the month of March at the Boyd
theater: February 28, March 1 and
2, the Waldorf comedy by Clare
Kummer "Good Gracious Anr.abellc."
For the week of March 4, Robert
Mantel in repertoire of Shakespeare
and romantic drama. March 10 and
13, the musical comedy, "Gipsy
Trail." Harry Lauder, March 14,
matinee and evening. "The Smarter
Set," March 17 to 20; the screaming
comedy, "Mary's Ankle," March 21
to 23, and "Oh Boy," week of March
24.
- t
Clare Kummer is one of those rare
playwrights whose work stand the
severe test of reading. That makes
them uncommon. The literary grace
in them is neat in the extreme, and
there is a whimsical strain of comedy
running through them that strongly
resembles in the main the char
acteristic touches with which Barrie
has been making the theatrical world
titter for more than a score of years.
But the Kummer plays there are
only just two of them so far, "Good
Gracious Annabelle" and "A Suc
cessful Calamity" have true dramatic
as well as literary worth. . They are
rich in "character studies, and espe
cially in sketches of figures belonging
to Bohemia, Not the boozv Bo
hemia of Upper Broadway, but the
land of wit and humor, the realm of
fancy and good fellowship celebrated
by John Boyle O'Reilly. They are
the plays of a woman of the world.
Yet only a few years ago the author
was known chiefly on account of the
song hit entitled "Dearie." a senti-
mental tidbit that went the rounds
of every parlor in the land. She has
fought an uphill fight, as all women
have to in the professional world, and
by sheer Dluck and talent she hai
made her way to the front of Ameri
can dramatic authors. "Good Gra
cious Annabelle" will be Dresente'd
at the Boyd for three nights begin
ning with Thursday, a matinee being
played on Saturday.
It has been decided to offer th fol
lowing repertory at the Boyd theater
during the engagement of Robert B.
Mantel!: Monday nieht. Marrh 4.
"Richelieu;" Tuesday, March 5,
"Hamlet;" Wednesday matinee,
"Romeo and ' Juliet:" Wednesday
night, "Richelieu;" Thursday night,
"King Lear;" Friday night, "Mac
beth;" Saturday matinee, "Merchant
?LYe.1ice;" Saturlay night, "Richard
III." lor all of these plays Mr. Man
tell carries complete and elaborate
scenic equipment. The tragedian be
lieves thoroughly in preserving the
traditions of the great reading of
great lines, but he has little sym
pathy with the theory that the plays
of Shakespeare should be staged
