NEW YORK STOCKS Leading Issues and Few Spe cialties Gain During Active First Hour; Advantage Cancelled Later. New York. Feb. 13. The stock market seemed to be favorably influenced in the early stages of today's trading by events over th holidays. Leading issues gained 1 to 2 points and a few specialties as much as 3 to 4 in the active first hour. Later the greater part of the advantage i was cancelled for no apparent reason other than resllslng from profit taking and the failure of speculative Interest to follow up their Initial operations. There was a moderate accumulation of buying orders, but this demand was soon satisfied. Th usual divergence of opinion prevailed respecting the significance of President Wilson's latest address and the bewildering changes In the Russian situa tion. In no important ousrter was It be lieved, however that peace prospects had been hastened. Shippings showed their prominence and strength to specific causes, a 3 point rise In Atlantic Gulf being arrumpanled by re ports of forthcoming charge of control. Industrial Alcohol, General Motors, Gen eral Electric, Baldwin Locomotive, Crucible Steel and Royal Dutch Oil constituted the other strong specialties, vefy little remain ing of their 2 to 4 point gains at the end. United States Steel reacted from Its early gain of 13.8 to a slight fractional loss, other stocks of the same division moving with similar Irregularity. Ralls, Canadian Pa cific excepted, were heavy and dull. Sales amounted to 470.000 shares. The general bond list was steady, but Liberty first 4s at 96.18 ami second 4s at 94 70 broke to new low ground. Sales (par value) aggregated $1,626.00(1. Improvement In Railroad Situation Strength en Corn, Despite Heavy Receipt. Chicago, Feb. 13. Improvement In the railroad situation east of Chicago gave strength to the corn msrket today despite the fact, receipts here wer the heaviest of the season. Prices closed firm, c to 4c net higher, with March $1.27 and May $1.2( 01.26. Oats gained c to c, and provisions 16c to (5c. Although liberal arrival made th corn market sag at the outset, bears appeared afraid to express the selling. Offering were absorbed so readily that It was evident quick outlet was being relied upon for any surplus stock. In this connection the fact was rolnted nut that all but four roads to the east from Chicago were now accepting freight without limit. A further bullish influence was the circumstance that a resolution Introduced In the senste favored n n Increase of the government guaranteed price of wheai All cereals. It was argued would be Indirectly helped In value by the proposed Increase. Brisk demand from shippers lifted the oats market after Initial declines. Seller were scarce, owing largely to aertlon that carriers would dlscrlmlnste against oats and would handle corn which stood in danger of spoiling. Provisions advanced on account of re ports that further government contracts would be placed In March. Cash Prices Corn: No. 2 and No, $ yel low, nominal; No. 4 yellow, $1.6001.82.
