WESTERN LEAGUE
SURE TO START,
SAYS DICKERSON
Omaha, Des Moines, Wichita,
St. Joseph Certain of Mem
bership; Open Season
in May.
Kansas City, Mo., Feb. 5. -The
Western league will be in the field
this J'er, with Omaha, Des 'Moines,
.Wichita, St. Joseph and Joplin certain
of membership, according- to E. W.
Dickerson, president of the league.
Owing to the destruction by fire oi
the park at Lincoln, Nel., recently,
there is some doubt whether that
club will be on the circuit this year,
Mr. Dickerson said. Sioux City is
bidding strongly for the Lincoln
franchise, he declared., Topeka is
anxious to have Western league ball
again this year, he asserted.
That Denver probably will not be
in the league , this year is indicated by
the president, who said:
i tit mileage this year is going to
be greatly reduced by the substitution
of some more centrally located Icity
than Denver. I shall within a snort
time visit Topeka, Sioux City, Han
nibal and several other towns under
consideration, and then call a meet
ing of the club owners to make the
two or possibly more changes."
The league headquarters wilt be
, maintained in Kansas City, Mr,
Dickerson announced that the season
would begin the first week in May
and end the second or third week
in September. The players will be
-ordered to report early in April, as
exhibition games with major and
Class AA clubs have been arranged.
Central Park Holds Lead In
Community Center League
Central Park held the lead in the
Community Center league by winning
from Dundee, IS to 9. Sallander did
the bulk of the scoring, making seven
points, but the good work of the Cen

was largely responsible Jor Dundee'
downfall. O'Brien starred for Dun
dee, making all but two of his team's
points. Snyggs and Geisler ' ajso
played well. Tuesday night Dundee

LAST TRIBUTE TO
JOHN LSULLIVAN
Unbroken Line Passes Before
Bier of Last; of Famous
Gladiators of Bare
Knuck Days.
Oyster Day, N. Y., Feb. 5. Colonel
Theodore Roosevelt announced to
night that he would not be able to at
tend the funeral of John L. Sullivan
in Boston Wednesday.
"I had a genuine regard for my old
friend John L. Sullivan," the colonel
said. "He was an old and valued
friend and I mourn his death."
Boston. Feb. 4. An almost un
broken line of men, women and chil
dcrn today and tonight passed before
the bier of John L. Sullivan, the last
of the old guard of heavyweight
pugilists. In full dress the body of
the dead champion lay in the dark
ened parlor at the home of his sister,
Mrs.' Annie E. Lennon, in the Rox
bury district while relatives, friends
and admirers of the old gladiator
called to gaze for the last time on
his features.
Funeral Wednesday
Meanwhile funeral arrangements
were made for the funeral which will
be held from St. Paul's church, Rox
bury, Wednesday morning. Hun
dreds of men prominent in the sport
ing world, representatives of temper
ance societies and others far , and
wide, sent word that they would be
present at the funeral.
It .as hoped that Rev. W, A. Sun
day, the evangelist, who declared that
John L. Sullivan won his greatest
battle when he ''gave booSe the knock
out"- would attend the funeral. "Jake"
Kilrain, the pugilist who battled 72
rounds with Sullivan in the old days,
is also expected to be here.
Plans for a memorial for the dead
champion were being considered
today, but no definite decision was
reached.
Contrary to popular impression,
Sullivan did not leave much of an
estates Although he had received a
fortune in the ring aid later in theat
rical ventures, his friends say today
that the ve'eran's estate consisted
only of his farm at Abington and a
few securities.
