Cattle Most of the 1,500 head of cattle
reported on today's market consisted of stock
that arrived (oo late for Friday's trade and
the market was slow at Just about Friday's
price sll around. Receipts for the week
have been fair; approximately 31,700 head
or about 1,000 leas than last week, but 3.000
more than for the corresponding week
year ago. Severe winter weather and con
gested railroad transportations have been re
sponsible for a very uncertain and Irregular
fat cattle market all week. Dulng the early
halt of the week with alight indications of a
loosening of the railroad tleup demand was
active and prices for both beef steers and
cow stuff advanced fully 36 50a During
the latter half of the week, however, the
demand wa somewhat restricted and trade
slow at mors or lees shaded prices. In the
main, however, cows and heifers are quot
ably 2640o highet than a week ago, and
there haa been nearly as much advance In
the stackers and feeders under the Influ
ence of very moderate receipts, and a very
fair mld'santer demand from the country.

Sheep Late arrival of aheep and lambs
yesterday were heavy, only a few here to
day, and trade was very ami. values were
sharply lower and the market uneven and
more or less uncertain. About 20 cars were
held over lsat night,' local demand being
very Indifferent. Trade this morning was
low, with little prospects ot cleaning up
the stuff on hand. Closing trade In fat
lambs has ben a catch-as-catch-can affair,
price ranging from steady to in apots
higher than last week's close, with the
bulk going anywhere from 25o to 40c
lower than the best time this week. Sheep

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Lessening of Bearish Confidence Regarding
i-eaec neip Btrengtnen corn.
Chicago, Feb. 2. Loosening of bearish
confidence regarding the outlook for Deace
did a good deal today to strengthen the corn
market. The outcome was a firm close
o to e net higher, with March
1.27 and May $1.24 1.25. Oats gained
o to c, and provisions 17c to 37c
Throughout the day corn had an upward
tendency that especially reflected disap
pointment of traders who have looked for
swift sensational developments from Ger
man economlo andi political troubles, and
who therefore expected quick Indications
that tha end of the war was not far dis
tant. The fact too that receipts here In
stead of being enlarged were even smaller
than has been the rule of late counted alio
against would-be eller. On ' the other
hand, weather conditions eemed the best
in a long while, and there was general hope
that a broadening of the crop movement
although deferred would soon become a
substantial factor. Week-end adjustment of
trades, however, kept the market on the
upgrade to the end.
Profit taking by shorts was mainly re
sponsible for the advance of oats. The In
centive for action on the part of shorts was
an unusual scantiness ot offering. Provi
sions rose with hog and because of the
bullish ahowlng ot warehouse stocks In Chi
