Saunders County Men Ask Au
thorities to Close Resort at
Scott's Lake Near

Fremont, Neb.', Dec. 10. (Special
Telegram.)-rThe grand jury of
Saunders county, sitting at Wahoo,
has ; recommended to Judge Good
that the resort at Scott's lake near
Morse Bluff be closed .until a man
ager can be found who will cuarar
tee to conduct the place along legiti
mate lines and prohibit all dances on
Sunday. The jury in its report said
it had found that young girls 15 and
16 years of age had visited the place
periodically to attend the dancesand
that they had frequently become' in
toxicated on liquor furnished by
someone, undesirable women fre
quented the place and lewdness pre
vailed, the report set forth.
The dance hall at Scotts Lake be
came one of the mrtst popular places
in this section of the country during
the summer months and scores of
Fremont young people visited the
place each week-end.
Hector Loves Fremont.
Rev. W. H Frosc, for 11 years rec
tor of St. James Episcopal church in
Fremont,, has accepted the call of
St. -Andrews church of Milwaukee
and is planning to leave Fremont.
Former remont Man Dead.
Word was received in Fremont of
the sudden death at Washington, of
II. B. Treat, a former well known
traveling salesman. Mr. Treat left
Fremont 11 years ago to make his
home in Omaha. A year ago failing
health forced him to give up his bus
iness. The body, will be brought to
Fremont for burial. Mr. Treat was
a. member of the board of trustees of
the Royal Highlanders and had plan
ned to go to Lincoln in the -spring to
take charge of the lodged invest
ment department. A jfiic, one son
and one daughter -survive.
' At a meeting of a committee of
business men it was decided to con
tinue the work this yuletide. notwith
standing the big Remand for funds
and work owing to activities in con
nection with the war. Last Christ
mas cheer and gladness were -brought
to over 400 needly boys and girls in
Fremont.
"Y. W." Campaign On.
The canyaign is on for the fund of
$2,200 the national Young Women's
Christian association will- raise in
Dodge county as this countys allott
ment of the fund of $4,000,000 the
country will raise for equiping and
maintaining hostess houses 'at the
army and navy cantonments of the
country was begun by a committee
under the "direction of Mrs. J. F.
Hanson. Fremonts share of the
fund is $1,400. z

Beatrice, Neb.. Dec. 10. (Special.)

yesterday sold about 300 head of
stock cattle on the street, which aver
aged about $40 :cr head, the money
being turned over to the Red Cross.
The coldest weather in years at this
season prevails here. Saturday
morning the temperature registered
as low as 16 degrees, and Sunday
morning it registered 2 below zero.

The funeral of the late J. W.
Bridenthal, a pioneer of Gage county,
was held Sunday afternoon at his
home at Wymore. Interment was in
Wymore cemtery. Mr. Bridenthal

Lieutenant Vern 'Ayers, , an old
Beatrice boy wo has been visit
ing in the city, left Sunday for San
Antonio, Tex., where he will be as
signed to duty in the aviation serv
ice. Fred Fulton, heavyweight pugilist,
writes his brother, George Fulton in
this city, from Minneapolis, that he
has again challenged "Jess Willard,
world's champion and posted $500 on
the proposed match and unless he ac
ceptrby December 20, he will claim
the heavyweight title himself.
County Treasurer Anderson Sat
urday remitted to the state treasurer
the sum of $17,274.38, collections for
November, and also sent in $2,000 to
take up two court house bonds. The
only county bonds now outstanding
are $17,000 court house bonds.

quet will be held at the high school

the Lincoln Asylum

Lincoln, Neb., Dec. 10. (Special.)
Dr. 'Lawrence W. Sidnell, first
physician at Hastings insane asylum
has been transfered to a similar posi
tion at the Lincoln asylum to take
the place of Dr. Pillsbury promoted
to superintendent..
Dr. Sidwell is an Omaha man and
graduated from Creighton. He lived
for 10 years at Glenwood, la., and is
a son of Thomas Sidwell well known
in Omoha as one of the superintend
ents of the Cudahy Jacking company.
The state institutions, are running
short on physicians and there are
now three vacancies to be filled.
Lincoln Stops Teaching
German in Grade Schools
Lincoln, Dec. 10. (Special.) The
Lincoln board of education this
morning passed a resolution discon
tinuing the teaching of German' in all
the public schools with the exception
f the high school and the junior high
6chool, where it will be offered as an
elective study.
The order will go into effect Tuesday..-

Gilead, Neb., is ordered to Fort Riley,
Kan., lor instruction.
Dr. Dargatz is 31 years old and was
graduated from University Medical
colleee. Kansas Citv. Mo- in 191.1.
He has the rank of first lieutenant
and reports at camp December 15.

AGAINST MR. REED
Ex-Deputy Attorney General
Now Lined Up in State Case
on Side Against
Former Superior.

Lincoln, Dec. lO.Special.) Some
time ago Dexter Tecumseh Barret,
serving bs deputy attorney general,
was pried loose from the state pay
rool by his superior, Attorney Gener
al Willis li. Reed. What caused the
axq to fall, is not exactly known, but
it was intimated at the time the two
did not pull well together" in harness.
Now Mr. Barret is back on the pay
roll again by virtue pf being' special
counsel for the state in a case where
members of the state board of educa
tional lands cannot agree and in which
Attorney General Reed takes an op
posite view tc that of Land Commis
sioner Shumway, who is responsible
for the comeback of Mr. Barrett.
The case involves the right td a
lease of certain school lands in Sher
idan county formerly owned ly G. A.
Heywood, who died a few years ago
The lease was made something more
than 20 years gao and now bobs up
showing an assignmenf from Mr.
Heywood to the Richards & Cams
company, who later re-assigned it to
Charles Harding and Delmer C. Eld
rige of Omaha.

Messages from Frovost Marshal
Crowder at Washington to Governor
Neville today say:
"Information is being received in
dicating that local and district boards
and other officers are discouraging
offers of voluntary service from
school teachers and other citizens.
Correct such condition if it exists in
your state, for it is the intent and
spirit of the president s call to accept
and enlist all voluntary services
wherever possible.
"All local and district boards are
notified that supporting affidavit No.
2 ill -questions to be signefl in sup
port of claim for discharged based on
industrial occupation may be signed
by the head of the division or plant in
which registrant is' actually employed
if the business of the firm extends
into more than one state.
"Under regulations chief of engi
neers may present a proposition of
students named by school faculty
pursuing an engineering course in one
of the approved technical engineering
schools listed in the War department
and may enlist in the enlisted reserve
corps of the engineers' department
and thereafter upon presentation by
the registrant of his local board of a
certificate ofx enlistment, such certifi
cate shall be filed with the questionn
aires1 and registrant shall be placed in
class five ,on grounds that he is in
military service of the United States."
