THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: DECEMBER 9. 1917. 'Acting Before Camera is Not One Sweet Song Perhaps you think the life of motion picture actress is an easy one. And in some instances you are correct in your surmise. But Miss v June Caprice, the young William Fox star, docs not take her acting as play. She works at it In one scene of "Unknown 274," ' showing at the Sun for three days, starting Thursday, Miss Caprice is called on to sob She did it so re alistically , that the was crying for some time after the scene had been taken. Ut course, there are many happy moments in making a pic ture but it's not all "one sweet song." all the time. . When the director at the studio finishes for the day, Miss Caprice goes to her home and re-enacts the scenes carefully and also enacts the scenes she knows she will be called upon to do the following day She then has a perfect understanding of what the director requires and not only saves him time and trouble but also adds her own personal ideas to 'he scenes. "Acting before the camera," de clares the Sunshine Maid, "is like any other work. You must be prepared. You must study. In that way only can you widen your show of emo tions. In every story there are shades of differences in emotions to be shown. Unless you practice these yon may get both the same and the motion picture fans are quick to, dis cern these points, and even if they didn't the story would not be as well told." Sometimes, too, Miss 'Caprice Is called upon to get up long before the sun has peeped over the horizon and there are night scenes to be done.. In the plays there are hard knocks to be taken and roughhandling requir ed. Perhaps you think these are all done, with smiling hearts. But they are not, ' Bills for the Mraad Sunday and W1nmUy art- the fhsns day at tha Btrand th waok. 'TV'hy, it would be ridiculous for rae to pretend to love gingham frocks and a quiet little home in the coun try," exclaimed Miss Talmadge. "Yes, I know lots of women on the staee and screen rush, into print with rhap sodies on dress retorm and rural so'itude. but I'm Suite sure I never i will - ' Would I give up my luxurious Rolls-Royce and ride fn the subway or crowded surface cars through choice? I certainly would not. And I don't believe any df these grand opera stars or leading ladies who clamor so loudly for simplicity would either. Ihey are not quite sincere it seems to me or they, could readily adopt the plajner mode-of living for which they say they crave. "There is the matter of my ward robe, too. But every time I plan a new frock I remember that I am giv ing work to a number of girls who would lose their means of earning a livelihood if women of the stage and society did not buy elaborate clothes. Now that the country is at war it is especially necessary that we spend our money freely, though not, of course, recklessly. Dressmakers and milliners must earn their livings just as well as movie stars or government officials and how can they if the en tire feminine population goes in for nunlike garb and severe headgear? "Yes, it's luxury. But at least yoii must give me credit for admitting it nr tevinnr to make you believe I have simple tastes." Miss iaimadge's latest picture is "The Moth," adapted from the novel br William Dana Orcutt. and will be shown at the Empress the first half of the week, and starting Thursday at the Muse for the balance of the week.
