Austrians' Papers Cannot Be
Acted Upon Until War is Over
The anxiety of more than. 100 Aus
trians who have rushed to the natural
ization office in the court house to
signify their intention of becoming
Americans before the declaraton of
Mar was largely unfounded, according
to Miss Grove of the naturalization
bureau. , ,
"There is no law prohibiting enemy
alitns from signifying their intenton
of becoming citizens of this country
and taking out their first papers. They
may even make application for their
second papers, which would admit
them to full citizenship, but these ap
plications cannot be granted until
peace has been declared," she says.
There have been 100 applications
for first papers filed in the last two
weeks, more than 50 in the last two
days, and 30 of these were filed Fri
day, on the eve of the declaration of
war. No applications have been filed
since war was decided, although
there is nothing to prevent the is
suance of first papers to Austrians
who can qualify even at this time.
The authorities welcome any stimula
tion in the "Americanization" move
ment. Mehrens Discharged After
Hearing Before U. S. Official
Peter Mehrens, formerly manager
of a department in a local store, also
formerly a socialist candidate for city
commissioner and for congress, was
discharged after a hearing before the
United States commissioner Saturday
morning'. He was charged with vio
lation of the war laws of the country.
Sam Hurst testified that Mehrens
ordered several United States flags in
his department removed. He ad
mitted that he allowed some to re
main u place. Max Loweunieyer
testified that Mehrens declared to
him, "I salute no flag except the red
flag."
George Shanahan, 2756 Webster
street, testified that Mrs. Mehrens de
clared at a card game where he was
present that she "hoped Germany
would lick them all and that every
body who goes over there to fight
Germany would be killed." Tic s
Mehrens made no comment on
wife's remark. .
