Cattle-Supplies have been
the lightest
they nave been on a Friday in a long time,
bad weather and a father unsatisfactory
trade this week operating as a check on
supplies.- There was not much demand for
the few steers that were here and in both
beeves and feeders It was the usual Friday
trade, movement being slow at the week's
decline. Native haeves are selling unevenly
lower than a week ago, most of them look
ing around 60o to as much as 75o under
laBt Triday. There has not been much
change in medium to pretty good western
beeves, but the high-priced kil.fls are sell
ing a little bit lower. There was a pretty
fair outlet for what butcher stock was here
today and sales looked about steady with
yesterday.- Canners are steady for the week
and the real good cows and heifers are
also selling nearly as high as at laal
week's close, but the medium kinds have
slumped around 26c as a general thing.
Stock cows and heifers have been draggy
the last two or three days, but packers
wer buying some of them today, and it
looked as though there would be a fair
clearance.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Embargo on Corn Produce Pronounced
Weakness In Grain Market.
Chicago, Dec. 7. Pronounced weakness in
the grain market reaulted today from an
embargo on corn and bat eastbound from
Chicago, beginning December JO. . .Corn
closed heavy, c to lo net lower, with
January $1.21 to $1.21, and May $1.18.
to $1.19. Oats finished 2oto 3o down
and provisions off 12o to 45c.
The ban on eastward shipments started
corn prices downward at once. It was con
ceded oh ail sides that the probable effect
bf the embargo would be to build up stocks
hen- and at other Important terminals, es
pecially when the Increasing supply of cars
in tho corn belt began to exerolse greater
Influence. Gossip was current that within
r fortnight the -delivery of the entire total
10,000 tar which the government has or
dered to the west would be completed. The
fact that the snowfalls throughout th
chief producing states had not been ot a
character to interfere with the curing of
corn acted as a further bar to any Important
rally.
Lluldatlnn by holders took pMce on a
large scale in the oats market The Decem
ber option In particular suffered in value.
Provisions fell with grain and hogs. Gov
ernment buyfng for Great Britain and Bel
glum tended somewhat to check the de
cline. I . .

New YofV Dec. 7. Bradstreef tomor

Government requisition and xpendltura
for all sorts of mill supplies are at an un
precedented height, transportation route
are Undr unexampled .strain and atreM Is
being 4ald upon th necessity for curtailing
nonessential Industrie to allow of full sup
piles of fuel and raw materials for war pur
poses. There is, therefore, Increasing eyl
oence ot -speeding up on tne so-cauea war
lines, accompanied by the presence of a
governmental check-rein upon activities in
other. .
Incidentally, scarcity of fuel or raw ma
terl Is or th working out of other processes
making for closer readjustment to a war
basis tend to restrict movements In various
ways. Trade In civilian supplies Is still
large, but there appears to be a concentra
tion upon food and wearing apparel to an
extent not hitherto seen. Further quieting
down of ordinary house building and oper
ations In furniture,, automobile (pleasure

other products la balanced by Increased buy
