Cattle The run of rattle was Just fair
for a Wednesday, while demand was very
broad for practically all classes of stuff, and
an active higher market resulted. Beef
steers, both grassers and the medium kind

has Improved the demand for butcher stock,
and today's trade was active and strong to
lOo or mora above yesterday. The heavier

Sheep Sheep and lamb receipt were
fairly liberal. Quality aot most of the offer
ings was rather plain, no real choice western
stuff being here. The fat market was more
active than yesterday, and prices were
steady to 16o higher. Packer buyers were
out early and were buying lambs up as high
as $16 for good western stuff. Fat ewes
were In good demand at prices fully 16c
higher than yesterday's average. The killer
supply was rather limited. Feeders were a
little Blow, but about steady. Some of the
inbetween stuff was hard to move at steady
prices, but the better grades of feeder
Iambs sold fairly well, the best bringing
$16.30. Fair feeding ewes were ailing around

Much heavier arrivals of grain, with the
exception of corn, wore noted today, a total
of 17 cars being reported for the two days.
Wheat receipts were very liberal, with 136
cars, Vhll only 84 cars of corn were In,
several of these being new corn and tested
from 21 to 26 per celt moisture. Elghty
or. cars of nuts. 13 cars of rye and 13 care
of barley were also on hand.
The new corn outlook la far from pleas
ing. Reports from several scattered points
Indicate a considerable amount of soft
corn and In many places the corn harvest
Is four weeks late. The Immediate corn
trouble Is to save the soft stuff, consider
able of which must be ted to the boss, while
the rest must be handled very quickly ow
ing to the great amount of moisture. The
exporting demand for corn Is good, but
clearances are very light on account ot the
consumption of practically all the moving
stock In this country and the delayed husk
ing of the crop. Cash quotations today were
very uneven, a good premium being paid
for old corn, sales being mado at a lii tu'
advance, while the samples of new corn
were disposed of at a 10jfl2e decline. No.
3 white sold at $2.06 and the No. 1 yellow
at $2.10. No. 1 mixed sold at $1.9591.96
and the No. 2 at the same figures. New

Oats were In good demand by local buyers
and by exporters as well, chiefly for animal
purposes and sales were made quite readily
at figures Ho to 1c over Monday's sales.
No 2 white sold at 69 c and the standard
grade at 69 while the No. 3 grade
brought 69c and 69o; No. 4 white sold at

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Pessimistic Reports of Slowness of Husk
ing Cause Materlnal Advance.
Chicago, Nov. 7. Pessiinlstlo reports as to
the slowness of husking had considerable
to do with a material advance which took
place today. In the corn market. Prices
closed strong lc to 2o net higher with
December 61. 18 and May $1.13 to $1.14.
Oats gained c to o and provisions 62c
to $r.5.
Deliys to husking sppcared .u result
largely from the fact that the new crop
of corn was not drying out uh rapidly as
expected. In this connection bulllshly In
clined traders put emphasis on statements
that prevailing temperatures were too high
for the best results In handling grain which
contained any heavy percentage of mois
ture and which was likely to gut quickly
out of condition. Complaints of car scar
city together with lightness of rural of
ferings tended further to keep the market
almost constantly on the upgrade, and so
too did unabated attention to the effects
of government establishment of a virtual
minimum price on hogs.
Oats hardened with corn despite absence
of urgent demand either domestic or ex
port. Buyers, ascribed to packers, gavs a lift to
provisions. The purchasing was believed
to be largely against Intended shipment to
Europe. Besides the hog arrivals were less
numerous than had been looked for and
slaughterings not half as great as a year
ago.

NEW YORK STOCKS
Substantial Recoveries From
Recent Low Quotations After
Early Spasm of Weakness;
Liquidation Exhausted.
Now York, Nov. 7, Active stocks mad
substantial recoveries today from recent
low quotations after n early spasm of
weakness. Rallies. It was generally be
lieved, might have made greater progress
but for the Increased heaviness ,of bonds,
many of which registered new minimum.
The most obvious Inference drawn from
the day's operations was that ths pro
traded liquidation had exhausted Itself,
rendering additional shorts selling extremely
hasardous. Apart from lower prices for
local utilities there wore no Indications that
yesterday's election exerted more than pass
ing Influence.
Gains were mot pronounced In the stocks
which recently experienced greatest loss;
namely, high grade rails and standard In
dustrials. Today's rebound carried Rend
ing. Great Northern, Union Pacific, New
York Central and Illinois Central, 1 to 6
points over Monday's depressed levels.
United State Steel made a gross advance
of S to 95i, snd other steels and equip
ments were 2 to 6 points higher at their
best, shading, however, on recurrent resid
ing in the last hour. Shippings and cop
pers rose 3 to 3 H points, but eased with
the general list, final quotations averag
ing 1 to 1 under tho top.
Trading after the. Initial tremor was quite
regular, although a few dormant issues
like Atchison at 63 and American Tele
phone at luflH were added to the long
list of new records. Brooklyn Rapid Tran
sit also made a new minimum at 47 and
New Haven's drop of 3 points to 21 put
that I'tock within a slight fraction of Its
lowest quotation. Sales amounted to 975,
00 shares.
Intcrnatlons, notably war flotations, led
tho general decline In bonds. Liberty 4s
were firm at par to 100.02c, hut the 3s
weakened from 99 60c to the low record of
99 444c. T otal bond sales, par value,

U.S. RELEASES DUTCH
SHIP ANDREFUGEES
Final Agreement on Tonnage
Between America and Hol
land Now in Sight; Ship
Belgians Corn.
(Ry Associated Pre.)
Washington, Nov. 7. An early
agreement between the United States
and Holland on the disposal of Dutch
tonnage m American ports was seen
litre today in the release by the war
trade board of the Dutch steamer
Nieuw Amsterdam for a return trip
across the Atlantic.
The vessel will' leave an American
port shortly carrying a cargo of pack
age treiglit tor Holland, iu.uuu tons
of corn for Belgian relief and several
hundred Dutch refugees as passen
gers. Wire cables badly needed tor
the operation of Dutch coal mines will
make up a part of the cargo.
Licenses for the Nieuw Amster
dam's cargo were held up by the
American authorities when the Dutch
government refused to give assurances
that it would not be interned for
safety as soon as it reached the
other side. In the negotiations that
followed the American government
refused to recede from its position
and finally the Dutch yielded.
