Cattle Cattle receipts were liberal for a
Thursday, and with the feeder demand less
broad the market showed a tendency to re
act. Traders were slow getting down to
business ar many of the rattle did not
reach the yards until after the middle of
the morning, but the earlier sales of beef
steers looked weak to 10C16c lower, and the
undertone to the cow trade wa easier
though whst isles were made early looked
about steady. What little feeder business
had been dona was on a somewhat easier
basis. One or two bunches of choice corn
fed yearlings were on offer, and made a
new top of $16.75,

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Corn Price Continue to Rag In Syaapathy
With Wall Street.
Chicago, Nov. 1. Corn prices avsraged
lower today, largely on account of sympathy
with the weakness In the New York stock
market. The close wa unsettled at $1,1714,
Decembar, $1.11, May; 44 Hown to Vie
up compared with 14 hour before. Oat
gained 14c to 101440, Provisions acored a
net advance ot lOo to $1,47.
Although Wall 8treet depression formed
the chief bearish element in the corn
market, weather conditions likely to pro
mote the movement of new grain tended
also to pull down values. Beside crop
estimates from a leading authority Indl.
cated that the 1117 yield per acre wa
44 of a bushel more than had been pre
dicted on October 1. Trade, however, was
tbeN smallest that has been seen for a
long time and when shorts tried to cover
on a moderate scale In the last half of the
session a gradual recovery set In. Smallnsss
of current receipts acted as a noticeable
handicap for the bears.
Firmness In the oats market wa as
cribed chiefly to the fact that arrivals
here continued meager.
HIT advances In the cost of hog carried
provisions sharply up grade. Wash
ington advices emphasising the scarcity of
the hog supply stimulated demand es
pecially for pork. Commission houses and
shorts were the principal buyers.

In the throe of another convulsion today,
liquidation encompassing the entire Hat at
extreme recessions of three to ten point.
Lowest prices were made In the feverish
final hour, no support betgn offered even at
markod concessions.
Selling was of a wldir and more urgent
character ami was frequently accelerated by
bear drives. Recent efforts of officials of
the exchange to mlnlmlte or restrict such
speculative operations culminated In official
action by the exchange requiring members
to report their borrowings of stocks to ths
committee on business conduct.
No new factors presented themselves but
the discouragement created by recent devel
opmenta was Incr.ased by predictions that
war taxes are likely to become more oner
ous. Financial statements Issued during the
day by various Industrial corporations bore
pertinently upon the government's policy of
taxation.
In keeping with all active market the
greater part of today' upheaval centered
around U. 8. Steel. That stock was offered
to the extent of 600,000. shares, or more
than 3$ rereent of the whole at an extersme
decline of 74 points down to 9S'. Its lowest

many Investment issues of that group, not
