Probing Into Retail Prices

Lincoln, Oct. 20. (Special:) The
' .State Council of Defense is instituting
an investigation ol the comparative
' prices charged Jy wholesale and retail
dealers in Nebraska. It. is also en
deavoring to discover the relative heat
value in the different kinds of coal.
Women Operate Sub. and
' Elevated in New York
New York, Oct. 20. Training of
women to replace conductors of the
lines of the Brooklyn Rapid
Transit company, who have enlisted
or are engaged in war service, was
begun today. Within a wetk, offi
cials of the company declared, it is
planned to have women crews in reg
ular positions on elevated and un
derground trains and classes will
be inaugurated for the instruction
of women as conductors on the sur
face system. J

Omaha to Send Base
Hospital to France;
Capacity 500 Beds
(Froma Staff Correspondent.)
Washington, Oct. 20. (Special Tel
egram.) A base .hospital with a a
pacity for 500 beds will be assembled
at Omah under auspices of the
American Red Cross to be shipped to
France when all the units are com
pleted. It will be a perfect hospital in every
department with the poss:ble excep
tion of plumbing,- which may have to
be provided over there.
Dr. Charles Hull and wife of Omaha
are in Washington until Sunday, re
turning from a visit to New York.
Dr. Hull is on his way to Chicago to
attend a meeting of the medical so
ciety. ' ;
Captain E. E. Daggett, formerly
stationed ut Fort Omaha, now with
the aviation section of the signal corps
in this city, was yesterday pnpmoted
to major. .
Dietz Memorial Stages Final

ners and cradle roll tots. A final rally
day program Sunday a 11 o'clock will

Colored Soldiers Go Oct. 27;
Farewell Planned Friday

Twenty will go from the First dis
trict, 11 from the fourth, and a like
proportion from other districts. These
men have been drawn in former con
tingents, but have been held, back
until enough could be drawn to make
one whole detachment as they pre
ferred to go together.
These men will -be entertained at
the Commercial club Friday night
before departure, and a. royal goodt
time will be given them by which to
remember Omaha. There 'will be
music and other entertainment,
speeches by board members and a
supper. '
Central Labor Enters Protest
Changing Woman's Labor Law
In protest against the suspension
of the women's nine-hour labor law
the Central Laboi union drafted jk
resolution to be presented to Gov
erno Neville and the State Council
of Defense.
T. P. Reynolds, president of the
Central Labor union, spoke in behalf
of the resolution and condemned ef
forts of the business men to have the
law repealed at the recent session of
the legislature. Members of the coun
cil adopted the measure unanimously.
