position. Sentiment was preponderantly
bearish and the shorts experienced no diffi

mora acuta depression. Soma of th day'a
advice were distinctly hopeful, notably the
review of the federat reserve board, whlrh
emphasised the Improved business condi
tions of th country. This waa neutralised
by August returns of some fifty trading
railroads which reported an Increase of about
$16,000,000 In operating revenue, all of
