The volume of business transacted In rash grain today was very small, due to the extremely light arrivals, only seventy. five cars being reported In. These were evenly divided twenty cars of wheat, twenty seven cars of corn, twenty-five ca" of oats, no rye and three cars of barley. Trade In cash corn was extremely dull and up to 13:30 no trades whatever were made, buyers and sellers not being able to determine the value of this cereal, although the option was somewhat lower. Practically all of these samples were carried over, al though some of the buysrs offered yester day's prices for white corn. A little later a car of N6. $ white was sold at the un changed price of $3.01, and two cars of No. 3 mixed brought $1.87 and $1.9. tha last sale being a car of near white. Receipts of oats were hardly sufficient to take rare of the local demand, and these were disposed of quite readily at prices lie up to Ho off. No. 2 white sold at $8o, while the standard goods sold at 67 e and the No. 3 at 67 Vic, and the No. 4 at the same figure. The sample grade of oats went at 67c and 67u. , There were no sales of rye, while spot on bsrley was about lo off. No. 3 malting brought $1.32 snd tha No. 3 grade $1.28, while the No 4 sold nt $1.36 and $1.27. Clearancea were: Wheat and flour equal to 106.000 bushels; oats, 707,000 bushels. Corn bulged In value today aftsr an early show of weak ness. Reports that Texas had absorbed all offerings of new corn. Oats gave Impetus to the upward swing of the market. Prices closed firm, o to 1 He higher at $1.19 December, and $1.16 May, Oats gained H" o lc and prlvlRlons 10c to 26c. Heavy selling, which took place at the outside In corn, was ascribed to increasing esxuranre that the, bulk of the crop had escaped from frost, especially as no un. seasonable low temperatures Deemed prob able during the next few days. Scantiness of present supplies, however, acted as a check on weakness and there was a decided veering away from the bear side after mid day, when word was circulated that the Mississippi surplus yield was rapidly com ing to meet an abnormal scarcity, which drouth had caused In Texas. Some of the most conspicuous buyers at the finish were houses that had started the day as sellers. Unfavorable weather snd smallnesit of country offerings gave Independent strength to oafs. The rise In produce was due chiefly to an nouncement of big reduction stocks of mcHtH ar western packing centers. Ex clusive of St. Louis the decrease for Sep tember was 64,OOI',OO0 pounds. The greater depression which attei.Jed today's stock market wss due to familiar causes or conditions; namely, steady liquidation of securities of a char actor heretofore favored by Investors. Recent severe recessions In rails were extended by one to four points, few Issues of that division escaping the processes of attrition. New low records were registered by St. Paul. New Tork Central and Balti more and Ohio while many other transporta tion stocks came within easy approach of their mlnlmums. No developments of a specific? or defin ite nature were offered In explanation of movement, but In well Informed circles the belief stllj obtained that the aelllng emana ted from foreign quarters. The bears were not slow to avail themselves of the decline which wss accelerated from time to time by the extension of shorts contrasts. Industries and the various shares Included In the war group were plainly Inclined to shake off the pressure against rails, but yielded with the general list until the final hour when gradual Improvment set In the market char ing from Its i.eavy tone to one of moderate Irregularity. United Statea Steel's course wss again Indicative of the general movement. From its low level of 108. steel rallied two points, closing at U0t. a net loss of an Insignifi cant fraotlon. Coppers were Irregular at beat, but shippings and recognized pool shares were strong. Sales amounted to 736.003 shares. Call money was stabilised by the money pool, but time funds weru again In scanty supply, though quoted unchanged. Remit tances to London and Paris were easier and Bonds were heavy on moderate trading, the Liberty Issue celling at 99.94 to par. Total sales par value aggregated $3,750,000.
