the Improvement In the msrket was more In
the nature of a better movement than In

NEW YORK STOCKS
Increasing Money Stringency
Determining Factor in Day's
Reaction; Liberty Bonds
Still Above Par.
New York, Sept 26. Increasing money
stringency wss the determining factor In
today's reactionary session of the stock
market Call loans opened at 8 per cent,
that rate prevailing until shortly before the
close, when It dropped to. 6 per eent '
Time accommodations showed greater
scarcity, local banks evidently taking their
eue from the attitude of the federal reserva
board, which Is discouraging long time ac
ceptances. Three and six months' loans ad
vanced H per cent to $ per cent' with Vir
tually no offerings.
Siocks moved Irregularly the greater part
of ths dsy, but fell back generally In the
last hour, industrials and other - leaders
pointing the way. The recession follows
publication of the weekly review of a trad
authority, which referred to the "utter eon
fusion" In the steel Industry as a result of
the prlcee estsbllshed by the government
United States Steel, which again . con
trlbuted a largj quota to the day's opera
tions, fell from 111 to 110 and closed at
U0H, a net loss ef 2 points.,
Msny other Industrials and coppers re
acted to a like extent and shipping, which
had been almost the only prominent stock
to show actual strength, also yielded.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Vain Weaken at New That Cora I Out
of Danger From Frost.
Chicago, Sept 26,-tAttthorltatlv - advice
that the corn erop as a whole was pro
gressing wsll and that a good portion was
already out of danger from frost, did much
toosy to weaken wiuee. . The close, ai
though unsettled, 1 was to lHo net
lower, at $1.21 December and $1.1$ May.
Oats showed a setback ot H to IHe,
Provisions soared beyond all previous rec
ords and finished at lain of 26 to $2
cents.
Although It was conceded that today'
weather map, and the forecast as well, were
unfavorable, the corn market averaged
lower throughout the day. Th adverss
conditions appeared to have been fully dl
counted yesterday, and holders Indulged In
profit taking, especially as no serious dam
ags from low temperatures seemed Immt
nent. Besides, ultra-bulls were disappointed
at the fixing of a lata date fot consider
ing the possibility of a change In the exist
Ing maximum price regulations. Reports of
the Increasing security of the crop In gen
eral contained the statement that one-half
to two-thirds of the yield In Iowa was now
safe from an ordinary killing frost :
Subsidence of demand for Immediate de
livery was the ehlet feature of the oat
market , '
Big advances In the provision market
were associated with reported heavy pur
chasing of meats for government sccount
Moreover, oontinued scarcity of hog arrival
her and at other renters hss resulted in
depletion of stock. Receipts today through
out the west totaled but little more than
half the number a year SCO.
