Market Exhibits Strength at

Reacts Quickly. ,N
New Tork, Sept 21. Following the lead
of the copper shares, which war stimu
lated by the announcement that a price ot
llfeo for the metU had been agreed upon,
th atoek market at the opening today gave
th best exhibition ot strength since the
turn of the market came on Wednesday.
A reaction came oulckly, however, and the
market was deprtssed below yesterday1
last figures. Toward th close renewed
strength appeared and the advance was re
sumed energetically. ' Total sales were (6I,
000 shares.
Tho price fixed for copper was regarded
as satisfactory, not only because It put an
snd to fears ot a severs falling dowa In
prices, but because of the favorable Inter
encee which might be drawn In retard te)
the settlement of similar psndlnt questions.
That .the market did nnt show better sus
talneid stobngth under th influence of the
announoement probably was due to the fact
that Ha effect was largely discounted by
the recent He.
Th coppers developed pronounced
strength on the 1st upturn, with s gain,
ot IHo for smelting. Steel share also were
active and strong. There were a few weak
spot among the Industrials, Including
Motor snd Zlno shares. Railroads, as here.
tofore, were negleoted. Canadian Faolflo ws
heavy.
Ther wa an unusually active demand
for Liberty bonds, which sold at a pram,
lum for th first time In months. The
rsng was 89.(8 to 100.02. 'I he general bond
market was heavy, with further weakness
