Cattle Receipts continue liberal, the
day's supply being about 7,400 head, making
nearly 49,000 for the four days, or twice as
many as arrived during the same period last
week. Quality of tho offerings waa much
the same as the first half of the week,
really desirable gradee of beef steers and
cows being comparatively scarce, and the
arrivals Including a large percentage of
cattle not very desirable either from the
killers or feeders standpoint. Anything
good enough to attract competition found a
ready sale at fully steady prices, while the
market was slow and weak at lOo lower
on the ordinary run of killing stock. Com
pared with last week desirable cattle are
around 15o at 26o higher, while other grades
are moving slowly at steady to unevenly
lower figures.
With the turn of the week there was an
unmistakably easier feeling tn stockcrs and
feedors, and while anything with weight
and Quality sold roadlly and well, It was a
slow and lower market for the general run
of light and medium weight stuff. Volume
of business for the week has been heavy,
and there Is every prospeot that larirest
supply of the season will be well cleaned up

Ttte grain market showed a stronger tone
today, all the coarse gralna advancing a
cent or more. Arrivals ot wheat were sev
enteen cars and the mills took practically
all the government's offerings.
Cash corn advanced from 4o to lo over
yesterday's sales, with a moderate demand
at the higher prlcea. White corn eold at
a wide premium over the yellow, the No. 2
white bringing $1.0803.10 and No. 1 yellow
selling at $1.0301.03. The better grade ef
mixed corn eold at $1.1701.02. Receipts
tots led forty-six cars,
Oats were strong and sold up 1014c.
Receipts were light, only thirty-three cars
being reported In. The standard grade sold
at O4 0O4o, while the No. 1 sold at
614O60O and the No. 4 at 59 io. No. 1
white brought the best price, 0o, while
sales of sample oats ranged from 69o to
69c
Receipts of rye were two ears and the
spot quoted 102o higher, the No. 1 and No.
4 both selling at $1.81.
Arrivals of barley were four cars, this
cereal advancing from lo to to over yes
terday's quotations. The better grades of
Nos. 1 and 1 malting sold at $1.81.40.
Clearances were: Wheat and flour equal
to 41,000 bu. ; corn none; oats, none.
Primary wheat receipts were 1,051.001 bu,
and shipments 327.000 bu., against receipts
of 1,821,000 ba. and shipments ot 1,042,000

able strength. In the final dealings, how
ever, signs that the market was over-bought
developed and decided breaks took place.

market of good support. Seaboard Interests
that were said to , have been among the
leading buyers yesterday were reported- to
have taken profits today on a large scale
near the end of the session. Hardly anything
but the weather eondlttona and the related
crop outlook received the least attention as
market factors. Frost had penetrated as
far southward as Nsbraska and there were
predictions ot additional frost tonight In
Iowa. Besides, rain and low temperatures
appeared to be widespread A prospect,
though, that much-needed sunshine would
folktw the cold wave did a good deal to
lessen bullish ssntiment before the close.
A strike of grain shovelers gave some
Independent firmness to the oats market It
waa thought the strike might Interfere with
deliveries on September contracts. Most, of
the union shovelers, however, remained at
work and the Indications were that the
strike would not prove earioua.
Announcements that the government was
requesting country shippers to give wheat
preference until further notice were ex
pected to diminish somewhat the move
ment of other grain, chiefly barloy and rye.
Wheat receipts continued liberal in the
northwest, but scanty in Chicago, especially
hard winter and spring wheat All requests
here for red winter wheat were taken care
of. A big trade in flour was reported.
Packers' buying formed, the main source
of strength tn provisions. Demand appeared
to be based on enlarged cash business and
on the firmness of quotations ' on grain
ana nogs.

New York Dry -Goods Market
New York. Sept. 20. Cotton roods mar
kets were firmer and a little more active
today. Raw silks were higher. Burlaps
were firm.
New York. Sept 20. After a period of un
certainty, with narrow and Irregular move
menu, the stock market gained strength
today and began a deliberate but well main
tained advance. Early declines were mads
up and net gains of moderate proportions
were established tn active stocks with occa
sional rises of 2 points or more. Total sales
were 120,000 shares.
Excepting the last hour the market
showed less buoyancy than during yester
day's upturn which failed to attract any
larg outside following to the long side.
The comparatively small volume ot orders
on hand at the opening led to a temporary
renewal of selling operations, but the de
mand which was uncovered wherever prices
were forced down caused the bears to re
verse their tactics and join Jn the bidding
tor stocks.
Individual Issues were favored hy devel
opmenta of the day, but there were new fac
tors of general enough application to offer
an obvious explanation of the movement A
good deal of attention was paid to renewed
Washington reports that the uncertainty as
to price regulation at least so far as con
cerns copper, would soon be ended. Fa
vorable conclusions were drawn from the
10 per oent wage Increase by United States
Steel and the steel stocks led the market
In strength and activity. Ot perhaps mors
commanding Influence for the movement,
however, were the indications that the sell
lng movement had exhausted Itself for the
time and that the market's position waa
still strong technically, notwithstanding the
extent of the recent rally.
. In the eteel group the feature was the
strong demand tor United States Steel which
sold at more than 1 points above the low
price of this week. The coppers held back:
by uncertainty as to the price to be estab
liehed for the metal, showed early heavl
ness, but later made a moderate advance.
Equipments were bid up briskly. The rail
roads continued to remain In the back
ground and with a few exception! moved
within narrow limits.
The bond market did not reflect the
strength ot stocks. The tone was Irregular.
Total sales par value, 13.336.000. United
States 2s registered declined and the 4s
coupon on call. Liberty bonds sold st
91 98 to 100.

60 rets In the Rio market with Santos spot
