Cattle Receipts of cattl wer liberal
again today, about 10,600 head, and the
two days' supply has been nearly 16,000
heavier than a week ago during th strike,
No cornfeds, of any consequence were of
fered, and while there were quit a num
ber of very desirable strong weight grass
steers here, the feeder buyers paid more
tor them than th packer were willing to
pay. At that th market waa active and
strong for anything In th way of beef
steers or cow stuff, and movement was
lively from start to finish.
In stockers and feeder th demand con
tinues very strong, and anything with flesh
and quality is selling at very high prices.
Best of th feeders are bringing around
$11.60011.60, and medium and common
kinds from $10.00 down. Demand Is get
ting broader as th corn crop approaches
maturity, and there Is a very strong under
tone to the market at this time.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND rROVISIONS.
Government's Prediction of Widespread
, Frost, Send Con I'pt Oat Feel
Bullish Effects.
Chicago, Sept. 18. Dread of crop Injury
by frost ltd to a sharp advanc today In
th corn market Price finished !o to
!o net higher at $1.18 to $1.1$. Th
close In provision ranged from 10016a
decline to a rlaa of 7c.
The frost bogey ruled the corn market
almost from th outset. Price began to
lump a soon as ths government forecast
was out showing that frost was probabl
tonight In North Dakota, There had prev
iously been unofficial prediction of a gen
eral frost between September 10 and 10,
As th widespread but mild frost last week
had been correctly prophesied misgiving
that damags might this time ba In store
took possession of the majority of dealer
and for the rest of, the dsy th bulls did
about as they pleased with values. Re
sumption of work at two big Illinois plant
grinding a total of 45,000 bushels ot corn
a day, tended further to lift prices, but
was only a minor factor compared with
the prospect that killing low temperature
might spread throughout the chief produc
ing states.
Oats as well as corn felt th bullish af
fect of probable unsettled weather. Shipping
and elevator concerns wer conspicuous buy
ers Influenced to some extent apparently
by a falling off In receipts at Chicago.
To meet millers' requests of 488 car
loads of wheat, the food administrator'
representatives hsre had fresh receipts of
only sixty-four carloads today with about
twenty-c; -ht carloads' carried over from
yesterday. Receipt In th northwest and
Canada, T iugh, were fairly large. New
quarters for th government wheat corpor
ation were arranged today In .the board
of trade hall, a more convenient location
then at first selected some bloeks away.
Provisions averaged higher on account of
a rise In quotations on corn and hogs.
Active selling to realise profits, however,
brought about reaction.

Market Stiffens and Losses
Largely Cancelled; Bond Mar

New York, Sept 18. After a period of
renewed heaviness th stock market stif
fened today and loses wer largely cancelled.
The selling movement appeared to have
been checked for the time, but toward th
close pressure waa again exerted. In soma
cases further declines wer recorded, al
though the list in general held up fairly
well. Total aales wer (66,000 shares.
In the course of the decline a number of
stocks reached new low points for the move
ment and in the case ot a few Industrials
the setback was severe. Some of the stand
ard Investment Issues developed heaviness,
but for the most part thea stocks were
fairly steady and bear traders found that
their beat eZorta were less productive than
heretofore in bringing on liquidation. Al
though there waa no Indication of an awak
ening demand or of any consequential Im
provement In the markets position, the In
creased resistance to pressure by the list
as a whole was a source of uneasiness to
the shorts whose covering was largely re
sponsible for the recovery eZected from th
early break.
yThe whole market apparently represented
nothing mora than alternating phases of a
highly professional market signifying no
