THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: SEPTEMBER 16, 1917.
RAIN AT DEMING
UNNERVES BALSAM
Suck an Unexpected Incident
that Corporal of Company
B Makes It His Head,
liner. ,
By CORPORAL M. M. BALSAM.
Headquarters Company B, Fourth
Nebraska Infantry, Camp Cody,
Deming, N. M, Sept 10. (By Mail.)
The unorseen actually happened.
It ,rained for almost five minutes and
the event being--' of such moment I
. thought it best to use the same as a
beadliner,
In my last letter I wrote you that
the Young Men's Christian Associa-
tion building was to be dedicated
Friday nfght, but owing to a terrific
wind and dust storm, it was impos-
' sible to hold the ceremony outdoors,
and it was therefore postponed till
Tuesday night.
However, in order not to disappoint
the boys, an impromptu program
was arranged, and I will say that the
: boys lurely enjoyed themselves. A
' short speech was made by the Young
Men't Christian association chap
lain, which was followed by a piano
solo. The vaudeville consisted of
a dialogue by Corporal Balsam and
Bugler, Rodgerg of Company B,
Fourth Nebraska infantry; a vocal
. selection by Corporal Gray of the
, Third Minnesota infantry. The boys
yelled their approbation. The next
number that followed was a Dutch
monologue by Corporal Balsam
(yours truly), who gave way to
. Private Johnny Lee of Company K,
likewise of the Fighting Fourth.
i' Out Go the Lights, i
.' At this stage of the game, when
Corporal Gray arose to present his
Swede stunt,- some whim of fate
caused a short circuit and the hall
.was in darkness. Then some brainy
chap' . remarked: "Fellows, this is
the darkest moment of your life. Now
.is the time to repent.
A laugh followed this sally, which,
seemed the signal for departure. But
Tuesday we are going to have a real
f good time, no matter what happens.
And if there is going to be any do
ings, you can take it from me that
Company B will be there with bells
V Didn't I tell you that we'll get re-1
venge for1 being beaten on Xabor
day. Yesterday "our boys" staged
a reil good game against the Com-
pany C outfit. We trimmed them
to a fare-you-well, the score being 1$
tO 5. . .':"-' - I i
, Lieutenant Major requested every
one who could play tall to turn their
names in to their respective com
manding officers nd in a short while
you may look forward to the receipt
of the regimental lineup. '
t The boys are telling each other
their right names, and owing to the
gabfest I'll have to quit.

rPublic Schools Will
Again Examine Teeth
Backwardness or waywardness of
boys and girls may be traced In tome
instances to defective teeth, Omaha
school officials declare.
On Monday morning the machinery
of the public school medical examina
tion department will be set in motion
for the examination of the teeth of
30,000 children. This is one phase of
the school examination work.
Last school year the Omaha free
dental dispensary for children
treated 1,600 boys and girls without
charge. Records have been main
tained and several aggravated, cases
of so-called mental deficiency were
relieved when contamination of bod
ies.from diseased teeth was removed.
The school medical authorities state
that esses of tonsil infection have
been traced to teeth. One "bad" boy
was made good by having his teeth
put in order.
Douglas County Corn
Promises Big Yield
W. I. Kierstead, who poses as quite
a farmer, has made several excur
sions over this and adjoining coun
ties and reports that corn never
looked as good as it does at present.
He brought in some etrs which are
filled from 'end to end' and which
will make a heavy yield with the frost
holding off but a short time.
John Brown of Florence says there
are, many fields which will go, 100
bushels to the acre this year.
Bloom of Brooklyn Breaks
Ankle In Bout With Leonard
Pittsburgh, Sept r18.--Fhil Bloom
of Brooklyn broke his right ankle
in the second round of a scheduled
ten-round bout with Benny Leonard,
lightweight champion, at the local
base ball park tonight, Spectators left
the stands believing 1 Leonard had
scored a knockout. Bloom fell in at
tempting to dodge a right to the jaw.

Charles Smith, negro suspect, was
for the second time tajren, heavily
manacled and closely guarded, to the
scene of the Nethaway murder in the
company, of ' Sheriff Clark, Deputy
Sheriff Lindsay and Chief of Detec
tives Dempsey Friday afternoon and
told to follow the route he took on
the Sunday after leaving the Netha
way home. T.
This Smith did with his customary
calmness. He exactly duplicated his
actions on his former visit ,io the
house, followed the same path after
leaving the farm, and- made no state
ment that did not tally with those
previously made to the police.
Smith did not speak except when
Questioned by the officers and when
brought to the spot on which the
body of Mrs. C L. Nethaway was
discovered did not betray by the
flicker of an eyelash that he was aware
of his proximity to it.
Nethaway Ptits in Appearance.
When members of the party were
on the point of leaving C. L. Netha
way was seen coming up the road in
his automobile and Sheriff Clark,
anxious to prevent a meeting between
the two, hustled Smith across the field
in another direction.
"There he is; there's the black
scoundrel who murdered my wife,"
yelled Nethaway excitedly and made
as if to go in pursi-'t of Smith. He
was prevented by Captain Dempsey.
"I would like to have witnessed a
meeting of Smith and Nethaway face
to face just then," observed Demp
sey,' "I believe that something would
have come of it with the two who
have cause to be most interested in
and affected by the murder standing
opposite one another." -
It is still the pinion of Captain
Dempsey that Smith is the guilty
man, .although he has not been able
to discover the final bit of evidence
with which to convict him.
