Demand was good for deslrnble beeves and prices are Just about steady for anything good enough to attract competition. On the ordinary run of grass steers, however, demand was some what Indifferent and the trend of values lower. Outside markets were heavily sup plied and In anticipation of an unusually heavy run next week all classes of buyers were more or less Indifferent except for real choice stock. The same held true as to cows and heifers. Good fleshy feeders were In active de mand snd strong, while on tha ordinary run of light and medium weight stuff the demand from both yard traders and coun try buyers was slack and the trend of values somewhat easier. New York, Sept. 13. Pressure on the stock market was less severe today, but the tendency was still downward. New low points for tho movement were reached by many standard shares, among which the railroads figured most prominently. Tha principal opposing Influence consisted of the requirements of the shorts, which led to buying on the breaks in sufficient volume to bring about temporsry reactions, and the movement as a whole was Irregular. Total sales, 690,000 shares. Liquidation of Investment stocks, which has been the most disturbing feature of ths recent declines, Involved several Issues which hitherto have not been conspicuous In this connection, but at the present price levels, holders were less Inclined to press them on the market. There was enough of this sell ing, however, to check sny tendency toward sustained Improvement. St. Paul, which sold down to 68; Reading, Northwestern. Lehigh Valley, Canadian Pacific. Norfolk A West ern and Baltimore & Ohio showed signs of pressure at times. That the decline was not carried further probably was duo to the large extension of the short Interest recently. There was evi dence of an oversold condition In spots and toward the close the demand from the shorts became more Insistent, resulting In a good rally In the last hour. Shipping shares were sold on news of ths reported loss of the steamship Minnehaha and broke sharply. Now Haven again re flected an Increaaed domand and Southern Railway preferred moved up nearly four points under the Influence of the resump tion of the dividend payments. American Snuff broke 10 and South Porto Rico Sugar 21 points. The market for roubles showed greater steadiness today, following the brisk rally. After easing off slightly the quotation re. covered, ruling nearly 3o above ths recent low record. The bond market was again heavy. Total sales, par value, $3,760,000.
