New York. Sept. 12. A wave of selling.
In which high grade railroads and indus
trials figured conspicuously, brought about
a sharp and general decline In stocks to
day. Many Issues went under the low
points of the recent setback, and In some
instances the lowest prices in a number of
years were reached. Trading Increased sub
stantially, the total sales amounting to
811,000.
Russian bonds suffered a relapse and the
rate for rubles was depressed abruptly to
a new low record at USc, compared with
about 52 In normal times. There was a
late rocovery to 14H-
Bear t niters operated confidently, meet
ing with little opposition most of tho day.
Greater significance, however, was at
tached to tho selling of conservative in
vestment Issues, which ordinarily are not
associated with speculative maneuvers. The
lack of support for such stocks as these
and the extent of their declines on com
paratively small offerings undermined the
market after a steady opening, and
prompted more general selling. The move
ment gathered momentum in tie afternoon,
but the low level finally reached, brought
out an Increased demand. In the last hour
the list rebounded sharply, regaining a
considerable amount of the ground lost.
Soiling was heaviest In steel, which for
a time was thrown in the market In large
amounts, forcing down the price 3 points.
Further weakness appeared in the motors.
Reading. Union Pacific, Delaware & Hud
son, Louisville, Canadian Pacific and St.
Paul were conspicuously heavy features on
the list. Southern Railway preferred ad
vanced on the resumption of dividends and
New Haven, which has shown decided
weakness recently, was In better demand
and moved against the market.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, $3,375,000. Liberty bonds were

bonds were' unchanged.

the three days' supply has been only a

here prices ruled all of 2550o higher than

the higher prices, ss all the local pack

to rows and heifers. In fact the Improve

Hogs Receipts were a little heavier than
they have been more recent days, though
offerings were still very mderate. The
market showed a fresh advance, most of
the hogs selling 1025o higher. The under

lsrge, but the demand for feeders was the
broadest that It has been any time this
senson and liberal offerings were pretty
well cleaned up by 11 o'clock at prices that
were generally steady to strong and in
spots looked higher. Nothing that was at
all desirable sold under $17.60 and several
strings of lambs went as high as $18.00.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Corn Weakens In Value Towards I-at
Wheat Arrivals Too Meager for Demand.
Chicago, Sept. 12. Corn weakened Is
value at the last today, owing to sym
pathy with a break In the New York stock
market. The close was heavy. Vie to s
net lower, with December, $1.17 and Mar
$1.14 to $1.16. Oats showed a net gain
of o to c. In provisions the outrom
ranged from 80o decline to a rise of 2o.
Depression, that prevailed toward the end
of the day In the corn market, had as a
basis the fact that liquidation Is not usually
confined to any on article and that many
owners of stocks were believed to be lon
on grain. As a rule, however, the selling
of corn during the later downturn was ap
parently more In the nature of proflt-takinl
than of stop-loss unloading. Previous tt)
the final hour, the bulls ruled the pit ex
cept Just at the opening. Initial decline
were ascribed to better weather for ma
turing the crop. On the other hand, strong
Interests took the position that frost dam
age had been more extensive than the trad
In general had assumed to be the case. Thlf
view was more or less upheld by the gov
ernment weekly report, but was lost sight ol
after attention turned In the main to th
bearish course of prices In Wall street
Oats developed firmness on account
continued smallness of receipts here. Coun
try offerings to arrive were scanty and It
was said numerous farmers were holding
back on oats until better assured of the
safety of corn. Export call for oats was
again In evidence.
Arrivals of wheat proved altogether too
meager to satisfy an urgent demand from
mills In Chicago and elsewhere. Flour
stocks In distributors' hands were also
said to be very light. Rapid progress was re
ported In plowing for the next winter wheat
crop. Kansas advices In particular said the
crop of that state would exceed the 12
per cent Increase requested by the federal
government.
Provisions were governed chiefly by th
action of corn. The bearish Influence of
big sales of compound lard to the Belgian
relief committee was thus more than offset,
especially as regarded pork.
