the boards at the East Omaha Speed
way Sunday afternoon.
Alter jockeying that would drive
the starter of a harness race frantic
they were finally off in the big race
with a trailing start. Rav Weishaar
of Wichita, Kan., a professional, pilot
ing a Harley-Davidson. won first
money by consistent, though not
Brilliant riding. JLapped in the first
fifty miles by Ray Creviston of Los
Angeles, , a member of the Indian
team, and Otto Ramer. a local soeed
demon, also piloting a Harley-David
son, he went into first place when en
gine trouble forced the leaders to the
pits. Gaining a big lead, Weishaar
was never threatened during the bal
ance of the race and won with a four
lap lead. The time was 1:2(T:0.
Otto Ramer after tuning up his gas
bike finished second easily with Le
Roy Roland of Lincoln on a Harley
Davidson, third. Walter Higley of
Cofteyville, Kan., tooling an Indian
after considerable engine trouble
finally got his mount in shape and
drove a hard race for fourth money.
Title and Cup.
By winning this event, Weishaar, in
addition to the cash purse, gets a lov
ing cup and the title to the Western
championship. Ten entries started,
but other were forced out of the
race by engine trouble.
In the ten-mile event on the dirt
track for single cylinder machines, it
was questionable after the first few
laps if any entries- would be able to
finish. John Bagley started the
trouble, when he spilled on the west
turn, while pushing hard for first
place. Every man entered had engine
trouble following thl mishap, bUtHoday. .Tyler's wlldnoss had much to do
was able to make repairs and re-enter.
Higley won first money on an
Indian. Dan Reeder of Lincoln, on a
Merkle. was second, -and Clarence
Johnson of Wichita, Kan., on an In
dian, ,was third, after being left at
the start with engine trouble and not
getting started until the rest and
pulled up at the pits. Time, 19:36.
At the time of his spill it was not
thought Bagley was injured, but late
in the afternoon he became delirious
and is now in a critical condition.
Physicians were unable to determine
the extent of his injuries.
The hardest contested race on the aft
ernoon card was the five-mile race for
stock cars only with side-car at
tached, carrying a passenger. The six
entries got off in a bunch and battled
the entire length of the race for the
winning honors. LeRoy Rolland fin
ished first with Otto Ramer second
and Berty Lutz third. The winning
cars were all Harley-Davidsons. The
time v. a 7:35.
The fifteen-mile single cylinder
race on the dirt track was cut down
to ten miles, due to threatened rain
and the lateness of the program. Hig
ley and Reeder again captured first
and second places, respectively. Hort
Bowman on an Indian finished third.
The time was 12:35.
Recalls Olden Times.
Two bicycle events were run: The
first a match race between Bert Pot
ter and Victor Roos on the old-fashioned
"bone-rattlers," with immense
high wheels in front and a small trail
ing wheel. Potter was winner in a
close finish.
The two-mile bicycle race was re
duced to one-mile. Everett Abies fin
ished first by a slight margin. George
Baugh of Lincoln came up from be
hind and beat out Morris Borsky at
the finish. The time was 3:10.
The races were run under F. A. M.
sanction. W. E. Dewey officiated as
starter. The judges were: Victor
Roos, B. C. Beaver and W. G. Hob
son of New York, a special represen
tative of the United Statei Tire company.

Ask to Have Lincoln
Highway Oiled to Valley
A delegation of citizens from the
country precincts in the western part
of Douglas county swooped down up
on the county board Monday morning
with petitions asking that the Lincoln
Highway be .oiled from the end of the
Dodge street pavement to Valley.
Spokesman for the country taxpayers
said the dust was "awful" and the
road in bad shape.
The commissioners will take the
matter under advisement, but it is un
derstood nothing will be done toward
oiling the road until next spring.
County board members feel it would
do no good to oil the road this fall.
The job would cost about $7,500. '
Central Labor Union to
Fight Price of Fuel
The Omaha Central Labor union
at its last meeting appointed a com
mittee of five to act with a like com
mittee of Omaha Typographical un
ion to see if pressure cannot be
brought to force down the retail price
of fuel in Omaha.
I It is contended that unless some
thing is done to bring the cost of fuel
within reach of the laboring class that
considerable suffering will be experi
enced, as wages have not increases
anywhere near in proportion to living
expenses.
