POLICE TIGHTEN GRIP0NSUSPEG1 Sheriff of Douglas County, Kansas, Says Smith Wanted There for Killing: Man With Wheel. Charles Smith, alias Larkin Mc Cloud, suspected of the murders of Mrs. C. L. Nethaway and Mrs. Chris tine Anderson, is wanted by the sher iff of Douglas county, Kansas, for heating to death a man named God frey by means of an iron wheel off a wheelbarrow, on April 4, 1917, at Lawrence, Kan, Sheriff J. P. Wood ward of Douglas county wrote to Chief of Detectives Dempsey advising him to convict Smith if he could. If Smitsr'is not convicted in Omaha Woodward wants him in Lawrence, where evidence against him points conclusively to his guilt of the brutal murder committed there. Believes Negro Guilty. S Captaiu Dempsey is still hard at work obtaining evidence on both the murders that occurred here, and, con trary to what has been given out as his opinion, is of the belief that the negro is guilty of the outrages com monly attributed to him. He points out that the murderer employed the same methods in both crimes, and, although Smith still maintains his innocence, he has not yet explained his whereabouts during the hours around 8 p. m. Saturday, when Mrs. AndcrSon was murdered, and the fact that he was at the scene of the murder of Mrs. Nethaway fur ther incriminates him. He has been positively identified as the man who stole the knife of John Lucas from the home of Frank Millgate on Sat urday afternoon.' It was with this knife that the murder of Mrs. Netha way was committed. Cannot Tell Whereabouts. Smith cannot explain where he was at about 8 p. m. Saturday. Mrs. An derson waa killed around that time and the nature of the wound was the same as that found on Mrs. Netha way. Both were jagged slashes of the throat and the unevenness of both the wounds is thought to have been brought about by a knife with a bent blade. The blade of the knife stolen from Lucas was bent and slightly ir regular. It is mainly on the foregoing sum mary that Captain Dempsey bases his belief that the negro is the guilty man. However, he says that he still has a number of clues to follow up, and that soon Swith will either be completely entwined in evidence against him or he will be purged of all complicity in the revolting mur ders of Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Nethaway.
