Cattle Receipts as usual on Friday were
rather limited, about 100 head, but the five
days' supply has been fully 3,000 heavier
than last week and nearly 32,000 heavier
than for the corresponding week last year
when the country waa threatened with a
railroad strike. Conditions today were also
somewhat unsettled, by a strike of packing
house employes which may or may not
reach serious proportions. Today only a

market was very unsettled with prices
for both beef steers and cow stuff fully 60c

Washington of the shipping board's plana
to reduce ocean freight rates by 65 to 76
per cent.
Steamship shares felt 3 to ( points In the
heavy selling of the first half hour and the
stocka ot other companlea whose future
hinges largely upon the attitude of the gov
ernment toward price fixing leat 1 to 3.
Ralls were featured during the active Initial
trading by a new low quotation for New
Haven at 3H and General Motors supple,
mented yesterday'a losa of 1 polnta with
an additional recession of as much, Ister

Standard hares were well supported dur
ing the reversal, recovering the greater part
of their louses before midday. Later, when
dealings dwindled, thla Improvement be
came more pronounced, especially In tobac

Pressure was resumed In the last hour,
together with realising for profits. United
States Steel yielded from 108H to 107U,

Corn Takes Big Advance of

Trade In cash corn was very slow and
while there was a moderately good demand
for this cereal, traders could not get to
gether on the price and up to noon ne
tradea were made. There were twenty
nine cars of this grain In the market How
ever, late In the tesslon a few aalea were
made at much higher, prices, the better
grades selling U the way from So to 7o
over yesterday s spot sales. No. 1 and No.
3 yellow sold at $3.12, 4e to 6o over
the mixed, the No. 1 selling at $2.07 and
$2.08, while two can ot No. 3 mixed. sold
at $2.07. At thla time no aalea of white
corn were mad4.
There waa a fairly good demand for oat
at prices ranging front lo to lc over
yesterday'a sales; the better gradea selling
op a cent, while the commercial grade
of No. $ white sold generally lo over yes
terday's prices. The No. 3 white sold at
87 Ua and 57 o, ths bulk of these sale
being made at ths more advanced price, and
the No. I at 67 c, while a rar of No. 1
white "-ought 58c. Sales of the standard '
grade were mads at 57o and 67c One
sale of No. 3 mixed waa made at 67c, and
the sample whits sold at 86e. Receipts
ot thla Cereal were twenty-nine can. -
Receipts ot rys were two cars these
being of sample grade and sold at $1.16
and $1.71. while the market waa qnoted
at lo higher.
Arrivals of barley were three can and
the apot on thla cereal was a cent to to
higher. No. $ barley sold at $1.26, and the
No. $ at $1.22 $1.23, while the No.
4 brought $1.11.

Strong houses took the lead from the
outset In regard to the buying of corn. They
assumed the position that under present
field conditions a killing froat before Octo
ber 1 might Inflict ssver damage on the
crop owing ta the prospect that as a rssylt
of advene weather ths maturity of the
plant would be dangerously postponed. The'
fact that the government crop eatlmat wan
almost certain to be as big as guessed at
befonband by private experts failed alto
gether to check the bulls. One of the reason
was that the movement of old corn from
rural sources had dwindled until today ths
four principal markets In the United State
received a total of lass than 100 can from
country holders. Despite liberal sales her
to realise profits, ths market flniahed at
nearly the top prices of the session.
Fean that the widespread rain would
greatly hinder threshing gave much Impetus
to the upward swing of the oats market. '
Receipts eontlnned relatively small, and
there was evidence of some fresh demand
from the seaboard. It did not develop until
after the close that private forecasts of the
government estimate yield had) been much
under the official figures.
Attempts to, prophesy as to the govern
ment estimate of tha aprlng wheat crop
turned out to have been too optimistic. A.
popular theory that an increase of 26,000,000
bushels would be Indicated as compared
with the prediction In August had to be
thrown away when after the close the offi
cial figures from Washington proved to bo
less than half as large.
Provisions rose with gains In the valu o
hogs. Word that the government would not,
at least for the present, try to fix prlos fa
meats tended to accelerate the advance, and
so too, did urgency of demand at LtverpooU
