    LABOR RALLIES
TO SOPPORT OF
NATION IN WAR
American Alliance of Labor and
Democracy Meets in Minne
apolis; Denounces Pa
cifist Movement.
Minneapolis, Minn., Sept. 5. The
American Alliance for Labor and
Democracy, organized for the pur
pose of squelching: the activities of
pacifists and pro-German propagan
dists and bringing; the nation's labor
forces up solidly behind the govern
ment in its prosecution of the war,
opened a three-dayloyalty conference
here. Frank P. Walsh, chairman of
the United States commission on in
dustrial relations, acted as temporary
chairman.
After the appointment of a com
mittee on permanent organization,
the delegates planned to recess until
midafternoon and then receive the
committee's report, which was to be
followed by an address by Samuel
Gompcrs, president of the American
Federation of Labor.
To Support of Nation.
Mr. Gompers outlined the purpose
of the organization as the assembling
for the support of the government
"all the moral and material power of
the working class of the nation."
"It shall be our task," he said, "to
interpret America's democratic spirit
and purpose in this conflict to ow
fellow workers, especially those of
foreign birth, and to combat every
form of propaganda which tends to
weaken the loyalty and devotion of
the masses and their willingness to
strive and sacrifice for the nation and
its high purpose."
Speakers at today's session de
nounced as disloyal and seditious the
activities of the People's Council of
America for Democracy and Terms
of Peace, which was barred from
holding its proposed national peace
conference in Minnesota.
Rumors Reach Russia.
John Spargo, one of the former
leaders of the socialist party, who
severed connection because of the
party's stand on war, declared that
several weeks ago reports had reached
troops in Russia that American labor
bodies would demand peace through
the people's council meeting.
"What can help the enemy more
than such startling reports, arising as
they do from the activities of these
pro-German organizations?" said Mr.
Spargo.

DEFENSE BOARDS
DEMAND REMOVAL
OF REGENT HALLER
State and County Councils Ask
Immediate Action Against
State Official Charged
With Disloyalty.
Lincoln, Neb., Sept. S. The con
ference of state and county councils
of defense, held here, has demanded
the immediate removal from the
presidency -Tf the board of regents
of the University of Nebraska of
Frank L. Haller, alleging that he has
failed to answer or acquit himself of
charges of disloyalty preferred against
him some time ago by the State
Council of Defense.
His resignation as a member of the
board of regents is also asked for. The
charges of disloyalty are said to have
been based upon statements made by
Haller prior to the declaration of war
by the United States, in which the
regent compared the United States
with Germany, with conclusions
drawn heartily in favor of the latter.
Want Law Repealed.
The conference also adopted a reso
lution, asking for" the repeal of the
Mockett law, by which schools are
forced to offer the German language
course of study in state grade schools.
It also went on record as opposing
teaching of any modern European
language in Nebraska-' graded schools
and protested against the teaching
of German in high schools of the
state during the war f
The conference also, asked for con
fiscation of property by; federal au
thorities for treasonable utterances
and deportation where the laws pro
vide fot it in such cases.,
A demand is also made for the sup
pression of the German language
press,, unless it, shall voluntarily
purge itself of "disloyalty and cease
its insidious methods of poisoning the
minds of its readers against the
United States government."
The board of regents -will meet to
day to consider the charges against
Haller and decide whether he will be
asked to resign from the board.
