History of the Expo-sition.

Lincoln, Neb., Aug. 31. (Special)
Nebraska's state fair will begin its
five big days of entertainment at Lin
cola next Monday. While nominally
. the display has started this week, not
until Labor day, September 3, will
the doors swing open to the crowds.
Then they are expected to come in
the usual numbers even though it be
a war year.
War Work to Front.
Many special attractions have been
arranged this year by the board of
managers outside of the regular
amusements, races and exhibits. A
food training camp devoted to the
conservation of 'foods, war-bread
cereals and sugar is one, with can
ning contests and war saving special
ties in profusion as part this depart
ment has to offer. The College of
Agriculture will make a special effort
to explain home projects in aeri-
" culture and home economics. A can
ning contest will be a feature, spe
cial demonstrations will be given each
day beginning Tuesday.
The boys' state encampment again
will be held, during which agricultural
school specialists will give lectures
and. demonstrations to the youths
whUf have been sent from various
counties to take advantage of the in
struction. Bands from Nebraska cities will
furnish music. The Nebraska State
band, William T. Quick, director, will
give a concert Siyiday, opening the
week's program, and music during the
eek will be by musical organiza
tions from David Cfty, Peru, Osceola
and Orchard.

Grocers and Butchers to
Ask for Sunday Closing
Anothnrcffort to sret a Sunday clos
ing ordinance for the grocers and
butchers of Omaha is being made
now by the Retail Grocers' associa
tion of Omaha. Petitions will be cir
culated again, getting signers among
the grocers and butchers willing to
have such an ordinance. '
Two years ago the association made
fight for s Sunday 'Closing ordi
nance, it obtained me signatures
of three-fourths of the grocers and
butchers of the city and 6,000 cus
tomers. Nevertheless the city coun
cil refused to nas the ordinance.
Secretary J. J. Cameron of the as-'
sociation then divided the city into
districts and grouped together the
grocers who wanted to close Sun
days. Thus there was a Sunday clos
ing rule in effect in districts. This
did not work out as well as it was
hoped, however, so that now the pas
sage of an ordinance will again be at
tempted. .
The grocers and butchers are plan
ning a second picnic for the summer.
They had such good success with
their picnic of July 19 that they have
decided on another one at L-akeview
Thursday afternoon. September 13.
The grocers and butchers did not in
stitute the Thursday afternoon clos
ing this summer and feel that on this
account also they are entitled to an
extra picnic day.
Council Bluffs Widow is
Eager to Serve in France
Mrs. White of Council Bluffs, said
to be s widow of means, is eager to
see actual service m France. Mrs.
White has applied to both the Red
Cross society and the National League
for Woman Service to be sent to
France.
Mrs. White thinks she can qualify
for the ambulance corps. She has
driven a car tor four years and can
take it apart and put it back again,
. In her eagerness to be given an
opportunity for war work Mrs. White
has registered in every class formed
by the two organizations. She has
entered the first aid classes and the
motor mechanics class of the ser
vice league which starts Wednesday
morning.
Mrs. White is at present in Kansas
City, but is expected home Tuesday.
Maurice Defends Britain
From Charge of Shirking
London, Aug. 31. In his weekly
review of war activities before The
Associated Press, Major General F.
B. Maurice, chief director of military
operations at the war office, spoke in
part, as follows:
"In the last month I have'received
a remarkable number of letters from
the United States showing how wide
soread is the belief that the British
have let the allied and colonial troops
do the most of their fighting. This
is part of the German propaganda in
the United States. I have prepared
for you a few statistics to show how
far this is untrue. .
"At the present moment the British
troops in France are six to one as
compared with alt overseas troops,
and the total casualties in f ranee
throughout the war have been in the

Swiss Workmen Strike as

Paris, Aug. 31.Workmen in the
Swiss cities of Berne, Zurich and
Basle went on a half day strike yes
terday as a protest against the high
cost of living, says a Havas dispatch
from Basle. The manifestation was
organized by socialists who, the dis
patch adds, declare that if it does not
produce results a prolonged strike,
involving muiicipal services such as
gas and' electricity, will be ordered.

Rev. Charles' Savidge in deep
trouble, all because of fifty, beautiful
blue-eyed women from Kentucky.
This is how it happened:
v A month ago Rev. Mr. Savidge mar
ried a blue-eyed girl from Kentucky
and a handsome young doctor from
Minnesota who did their courtship in
a correspondence school. The matter
got some newspaper publicity and at
once fifty husbandless women of Ken
tucky wrote, wired and long-distanced
him to get them husbands.
Some enterprising Omaha newspa
per man put the next link in the
chain by "writing a story for a St.
Louis paper about the quest of the
Kentucky maidens. In a few days the
astonished Rev. Mr. Savidge, who did
not even know of the St. Louis story,
was overwhelmed with an avalanche
of mail from chivalrous northern
gentlemen, offering to rescue the
beautiful Kentucky maids from their
'raa'nless existence.
That was three days ago, and he
how has. ISO letters, which makes
three husbands apiece for the Ken
tucky women.
