Corn and Wheat Region Bulletin.
Rains in the central plains states were
very beneficial to corn, and the crop ad
vanced well in most of tho central, south
ern and eastern districts. It was much
improved by rain In eastern Kansas, but
was permanently damaged by drouth In
the western portion. Rain is also needed
In some localities In the Ohio valley. The
weather was too cool in the lower Missouri
valley and northward for most rapid growth
of corn, but It Is earing well In, the Ohio
and central Mississippi valleys. Haying
and harvesting, and threshing of winter
wheat, spring wheat, oats, .rye, and barley
progressed favorably. Buckwheat, rice, flax,
pastures, meadows, potatoes, and truck
crops Improved wherever rain fell.

CHICVDO GRAIN MARKET
Uncertainty Over New Peace Move and Food
' Control Developments Cause- Decline.
Chicago, Aug. 16. Uncertainty today
over the new peace move and In regard to
food control developments, had a tendency
to make grain quotations decline. Cam
closed heavy, HSTio net lower at $1 11$
$1.15', December and $1.12' May. Wheat
finished 5 cents down, but steady at $3
September. The outcome In oats was un
changed to half cent oft. Provisions showed
an advance of 1216 to 30 cents.
Sellers had ths advantage from the out
set In the corn market. Only minor rallies
took place and thy served In the main no
purpose but to Increase the pressure from
the bears. The favorable crop Outlook
counted against the bulls. Reports that dis
tiller wcro again free buyers at Peoria at
tracted considerable attention, but were off
set by the fnct that other Industries ap
peared to have withdrawn temporarily as
bidder In the market hero.
In wheat there was a sharp decline ow
ing to liquidation by scsttered holders, who
were confronting a , certainty that within ten
daya business in future deliveries would be
a thing of the past. Besides, the hlds from
mills and other purchases of spot wheat
were decidedly lower, than yesterday, and
the call by no means energetic
Oat gave way with other cereals, A
contributing cause was an official statement
that according to the present prospect this
season, Iowa would yield nearly (0,000,000
bushels more than last year.
Provisions Jumped In' response to a con
tinued record-breaking advance In the hog
market. Packers wero active buyers, chiefly
of ribs.
