Cochran's Double and Delayed
Steal, Followed by Monroe's
Sacrifice Fly, Fatal to
Omaha.
fa Rourke got a haircut yesterday.
As a result the jinx crossed his ath
, letes and Omaha dropped a gruelling
1 1 eleven-inning- contest to the Joplin
- Miners, 4 to 3;
, There is no disputing the assertion
that Ta's haircut was responsible for
the defeat. The Miners got every
break'in the luck and every close de
cision was given to the enemy by his
majesty, the umps. Something must
be responsible and the circumstantial
evidence points to the tonsorial ar
tist'i performance on Pa's bean.
Joplin got a two-run lead on Oma
' ha in the fourth. With two down,
Monroe singled to center and Merz
walked Davis. Lamb's single scored
Monroe. Merz bobblcd Yardlcy's
throw into the diamond and Davis
scooted home, while the ball rolled
to the granstand.
Lead Is Short-Lived.
The Joplin lead, however., was
J short-lived. The Rourkes made back
the two runs and one to boot in the
home half of the fourth. After Miller
fanned, Shaw dropped a safe high fly
into left. Ben stopped at first to see
what happened to the pill, or he
could have made second standing up.
Yardley's single sent Shaw to sec
ond and Brotlem's single scored
hiin.f Yardlcy went to second on the
blow, ' '
Yardlcy and Brottem got foxcy and
executed a nifty double steal. This
caused Maple so much grief he un
coupled a wild pitch, on which Yard
ley scored and Tony went to third.
' i ony came home on Nye's hit.
Joplm tied the count in the eighth.
Collins, batting for Maple, walked
i and Cochran sacrificed. Carlisle's
safety scored him.- . .
? Cochran opened the fatal eleventh
with a double to center, lit worked
a delay steal of third on Brottem and
scored on Monroe's sacrifice fly to
center. (
The last game of the scries be
tween Omaha and Joplin will' be
played starting at 3:15.
