Chicago, Aug.l 8. Jim Vaughn
pitched almost invincible ball against
the league 'champions while Chicago
hit Marquard opportunely and shut
out the visitors 2 to 0.
The visitors made only two hits off
Vaughn, a double by Johnston in the
second inning, and a single by Olson
in the seventh. Johnston was the only
ma to reach second. Vaughn issued
only one pass, a walk to Hickman in
the ninth inning.
Chicago scored its first run in the
second inning with a walk to Deal
ad singles by Kilduffff and Elliott.
The other run was the outcome of
singles by Flack and Doyle and a
fielder's choice on Merkle's grounder
in the sixth. The game was played in
one hour and twenty-three minutes.

Cincinnati, Aug. 8. Boston opened
the series here today by dividing a
double header with Cincinnati. Both
games were pitchers' battles, but in
the first game Bost t bunched three
of their five hits with two Cincinnati
errors and scored two runs in the
eighth, which proved enongh to win.
In the second game Toney outpitched
Kehf, holding Boston to three scat
tered hits and no runs, while Cincin
natihit safely six times and in the first,
sixth and seventh innings managed
to score.

1916, had no trouble in winning the
singles honors again. He easily de
feated all opponents who faced him.
In the doubles Powell and Hanighen
had similiar success.
The Tri-state tournament covers
Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Race Track.
Malvern, la., Aug. 8. (Special Tel
egram.) Ten thousand persons at
tended the big fair and race meet
at Malvern today and there is every
promise of another record-breSking
crowd, tomorrow. The sensational
fights of Ruth Law, the aviatrix, were
big teatures ot the afternoon.
The race track was in splendid con
dition and three very fast races were
put on. Tom Denison of Omaha was
here with his fast brown pacer, Hal
Conner, and took the 2.11 pace in
the fastest time made. ,
Tomorrow closes the races with the
best program yet. Three fast harness
races, two aeroplane Mights with a
five-mile race between an aeroplane
and auto, and two ball games.
In the ball games, today Malvern
won eve Emerson and Percival won

Draft Number Well

Maria , Plestina, Omaha's heavy
weight champion wrestler who has
been matched to clash with Joe
Steelier, the Dodge phenom. at the
Omaha Auditorium Labor day, was
not summoned to the colors on the
draft, as was first reported from San
rrancisco where Plestina registered,
Marin's serial number is 3,608 and is
weir down in the list of draft numbers.
He will not be called until the second
draft at least and perhaps not even
then.
Plestina is a former subject of the
dual monarchy of Austria. He is not
an Austrian, however, but a Slav and
his hate of .Austria and its govern
ment is more cordial than a native
born American's. Neither has Marin
any love for the kiser or his kin.
Plestina is married and has three
children. All are dependent upon his
support, nut it Mann makes enough
at the, wrestling game to provide for
his family during his absence, he prob
ably will not ask exemptioN in case
he is called on the second draii

Washington, ' Aug. 8.-Xontracs
have been let by the Navy department
for 4,500,000 yards of woolen uniform
ctoth at an Aaareaite rntr n( mnr
than $16,000,000. The contracts, it was
announced tonight, have been dis
tributed among thirty-five firms in dif
ferent sections of the country. About
15,000,000 pounds of wool is required

broke" even in its double header with
Cleveland here today, winning the
first game, 3 to 2 and losing the sec
ond, 2 to 1. New York won the first
game by knocking Bagby out of the
box-in the fourth inning, scoring six
runs on six hits and an error. Nuna
maker cleared the bases with a two
base hit. Fisher held the visitors in
check and hit a home.run and a single.
The second game was a pitchers' bat
tle between Caldwell and Coveleskie.
The three runs, scored were home
runs, Smith and Graney hitting two
for Cleveland and Caldwell one for
