Cattle Receipts were light as usual on
Friday, only about 400 head being reported
In. The week's receipts, however, have been
tolerably liberal, about the same as laat
week and fully 4,000 more than for the
corresponding week a year ago. Not a great
many cornfed beeves are coming an there
were practically none here today, the sup
ply consisting almost entirely of western
range cattle. As on Thursday, the demand
showed considerable Improvement and
prices were steady to strong all along the
line.
Cows and heifers have recovered most
of the deoline of the forepart of the week
and the bulk of the stock Is selling In
practically the same notches as a week
ago. Veal calves, bulls, stsgs, etc., were
aluo In fair demand today and about steady.
The recent rains have brought about a
revival In stock cattle and feeding steers
and nearly all of Monday'e and Tuesdav'a
sharp declines have been recovered. Prices
today were fully 60o higher than tha low
spot Tuesday an It looks as If a very
gooa clearance tor tne week would be ef
fected. Quotations on cattle: Good to choice

Sheep The local run was the largest on
the map today, other points having next to
nothing, while here there was a fairly lib
eral suppfy. The result was that while
steady prices were In force elsewhere, pack
ers were able to enforce another quoted
slump In fat lambs here, sales made up to
noon ranging largely around $14.00. The
continued decline In killers had a bearish
Influence on feeder prlcea and best grades
were calltd 1015c lower, while In between
and fleshy kinds were haM to move at

a choice light variety. Old sheep were for

were quotable.

CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET.
Rumors of Peace Developments Unsettles
Cora and Wheat Value.
Chicago, Aug. (.Chances that peace de
velopments might assume some Importsnce
during the double holiday Intervening be
fore Monday did a good deal to overcome
in the oorn market today an advance which
had resulted from continued lack of rain and
from temporary scantiness of offerings. The
close was unsettled at the same as yester
day's finish to Ho lower, with December
$1.17t to $1.17. and May $1.16Vi to
$1.15S. Wheat declined SHo net. but In the
end held steady at 93. 27 Va for September.
Oata lost HtrHe. In provisions there wss
a rise of 37 55c.
At first bulls appeared to have a de
elded advantage In the corn market, as
crop reports from the seutliwest were un-
favorable and no promise of drouth relief
was In sight. After buyers had forced a
material upturn In values, however, selling
became free, owing to some extent to th
cooler temperatures prevailing where ex
ceeslve heat had been increasing the dsn
ger of cro damage from absence of mots
ture. Optimistic advices regarding the Illi
nois crop counted also In favor of a bearish
reaotton, but unloading on tha part of
holders did not assume large proportions
until after notice had been taken of various
items of peace gossip. Including a statement
from a Belgian socialist authority that Rua-
sia and Austria were on the verge of an
understanding. On the downturn that pre-
ceded the close, one prominent long sold
more than 1,000.000 bushels.
Wheat eased down as a result In some de
gree or assertions that farmers In the win
ter wheat region were showing more will
Ingness to sell and that as yet millers were
not taking hold freely. Showers In Canada
and cool weather on the United Statea aid
of the International border were construed
aa Indicating a rather more hopeful outlook
ror tne spring crop.
Oats acted heavy. The market felt the
weight of hedging sales and also sympa
thised with the weakness of corn at the
close.
Higher prices on hogs helped io lift
provisions. Meat shipments were liberal and
Liverpool advices also encouraged buying.

Cash Corn Market Strong, With
Increased Arrivals, Brisk
Demand and Sharp Price
Advance.
Omaha, August 3, 1917
The cash corn situation was very strong
today with Increased arrivals and an ex
cellent cash Inquiry forced a sharp ad
vance In prices and established a new
high price level on this article.
The wheat market was also strong with
prices quoted from 2 to 4c above the quo
tations of the previous day but tha de
mand for this cereal was very Indifferent
and only a few cars wire reported sold up

$3 8l' 01 n CRf ' N' 1 prln brount
The corn market ruled generally from
