CHICAGO GRAIN MARKET.
Settlement of Switchman's Strike Results in
Profit-taking.
Chicago, July 30. Largely as a result of
the settlement of the switchmen s strike.
holders of corn showed a disposition today
to Indulge in general profit-taking sales.
Accordingly, the market hsd a downward
slant most of the time. Prices closed steady,
unchanged to c lower with September at
1 634 1.63 and December at 11.18 O
1.18 Wheat finished unsettled. So off to
2c up, at $1.62 for July and $2.24 for Sep
tember. The outcome in oats ranged from
lc decline to 4o advance and In provisions
from a setback of 7c to a rise of 10012a.
Selling pressure acted as a weight on the
corn market throughout the day except
during a rather lively bulge at the outset
Unfavorable crop conditions in the south
west and west were chiefly responsible for
the Initial strength. It was not long, how
ever, before gains disappeared and a sag
began which at no time subsequently was
altogether overcome. In addition to the
strike settlement, a renewal of peace gossip
tended in soma degree to handicap the bulls.
Auspicious growth conditions in the central
states, together with an fhcrease of tht
visible supply total counted also on the bear
side of the market.
Welcome rains both sides of the Canadian
border giving relief from hot winds which
had been threatening the spring wheat crop
turned prices downgrade tor the September
delivery of wheat. July, though, proved
firm. Influenced by demand from a few be
lated shorts.
Oats swayed In sympathy with corn.
Threshing returns showsd heavy yields.
Provisions averaged lower, chiefly In con
sequence of a break which took place In
hog prices and which in turn, was due to
resumption of work by the striking switch
man here.

Cattle Cattle receipts wsra liberal today,
about $.700 head, the largest run so fsr
this season, and the greater proportion of
the offerings were western grassers. Strictly
choice cornfeds were very scarce and quot
bly not far from steady. Prime 1,400
pound beeves sold for $13.45. Prime grass
beeves, which were also not far from steady,
arc selling as high as $10.40. On every
thing else on the beef line. Including cows,
ths market was very dull and mors or less
demoralised, with bids and sales anywhere
from lOo to $6o lower than last wsek.
Owing to the hot winds of the last day
or two and the critical condition of ths
corn crop the situation in stockers and
feeders verged on the panicky. Demand
from both yard traders and country buy
ers waa reduced to the minimum, and, as
supplies of this kind wers large, bids were
sharply lower all along the line. In many
oases 60c lower than last week.
