Six Dairymen Threatened With
Jail Sentences by Judge Mad
den; Charged With Selling
Inferior Product.
"You are cheating little babies' when
you sell milk that is below the stand
ard," declared Police Judge Madden,
to six milk dealers who appeared be
fore him in court on a charge of sell
ing inferior milk.
The court threatened to send t lie
next dealer who appeared before him
charged with selling adulterated pro
duct to jaii.
"The evidence shows that most of
jou have been arrested before on this
charge," said the court. It is a serious
offense one that threatens the
health, if not the lives, of hundreds of
persons who buy milk from you on
the supposition that they are getting
good, wholesome food."
A roar of laughter followed the
answer of the second man on the list
when he stated he represented the
"Square Deal Dairy."
Most of the defendants said that
the present warm weather was caus
ing the cows to give poor milk.
Milk Below Standard.
Dr. Crowley, city chemist, and
Claude F. Bossie, milk and dairy in
spector, testified that the milk was
below the standard and gave the
terts reports. Here is a list of deal
ers who were fined $25, and costs
each :
Martin Schmidt, Square Deal dairy.
Alfred Hansen, Grasslau dairy.
Jim Skovgaard, Magic City dairy.
J. M. Jensen, 'Country Club dairy.
George Hansen, Avery dairy, and
Alfred Skovgaard, Oakwood dairy,
were each fined $30 and costs.
In passing, sentence, Judge Madden
said:
"The next time it'll be jail and not
merely a fine.''
Seventeen Omaha dairymen and
three farmers were fined Friday for
selling inferior milk.-

flying, the first detachment of men
left Fort Crook last night.
Not for France not yet. But
probably many of them will never sec
their friends . again that they have
made the last two weeks at Fort
Crook.
The truck company of the quarter
master's reserve corps, thirty-five
men in all, Jeft Friday night for the
cantonment at Fort Des Moines, la.,
where they will soon be hauling sup
plies for the national army to be
gathered there. They will probably
go to France later.
Machine Gun Company at Ft.
Crook Entertained at Picnic
The machine gun company from
Fort Crook was entertained last night
at a picnic in their honor at Bellcvuc.
There was plenty of fried chicken and
plenty of girls, so what more could
a young soldier ask.

Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard left Omaha
three liatirs after their marriage for
Prcsho, S. D., where the bridegroom
will engage in the real estate business

mayor of Prcsho.
Mrs. Parks and her 10-ycar-old son,
James, boarded the train at Oklahoma
City Thursday night. Their destina
tion was Presho.

When a smiling, middle-aged man
asked Mrs. Parks if he might occupy
the -.t in front of her and' her son,
on which they had placed their suit
cases, :.he replied:
"Of course."
She looked at him aiid he looked
at her. It was love at first sight.
They soon learned they were going
to the same town. .Mrs. Parks was
giving up her home at Brockwell,
Okl.
The widow and the widower agreed
that long engagements were all right
for young folks, but not for the middle-aged.
So when they reached Omaha at
11 o'clock they hurried to the court
house, procured a marriage license and
were wed half an hour later.

A couple of hours were spent in
sightseeing and then the newly-weds
continued their journey henceforth
their honeymoon. " '
"Won't my brother, the mayor, be
surprised when I show up in Presho
with a bride," chuckled Hubbard:

pid" Stubbendorf, marriage license
clerk, "she was pretty well satisfied
with the husband she found on the
train."
The son, seemed glad to get a new
daddy, too.-
Friday the Hottest Day
Of the Year in Omaha
Friday was the hottest day of the
summer so far. Omaha had- a maxi
mum temperature of 98 degrees "ac
cording to the weather bureau report.
All through southern Nebraska the
temperatures ranged above 100. Fair
bury and Culbertson were the hot
test places in the state with 107 de
grees each. Grand Island and Hast
ings had 106 each; Fairmont and Red
Cloud, 105; Lincoln and Broken Bow,
104. The hottest place in the entire
country was in the north. It .was
Dickinson,, N. D., w here a maximum
of 108 degrees was registered. - -

Miss Rogers had been sicc for sonic
tinie. Her death was hastened, it is
said, by the hot weather.
Miss Rogers had been a resident of
Omaha for more than thirty years, a
large part of the time as a public
school teacher. She was a member
of the Daughters of the American
Revolution and took arT active inter
est in church and social work.
She is survived by three nieces and
three nephews of Omaha.
