Fremont will entertain the Nebraska Volunteer Firemen's association at the annual convention in January. This was the decision reached by the board of directors of the Fremont fire department in spe cial cession. HARRIES SENDS WORDTOBRIGADE Nebraska's New Brigadier Gen eral Says Team Work Wins in War; Husker Guard is Among Finest Type. Harric of the Nebraska National Guard, appointed by Governor Neville to command the three Nebraska regi ments, Fourth. Fifth and Sixth, said tonight to The Bee: "No state in the union could pos sibly have any advantage over Ne braska with respect to the physical and mental qualities which are essen tial to military success. The making of soldiers for such warfare as that of today is necessarily difficult, but the sound bodies and the keen intelli gence in which the Nebraska brigade is rich will produce results which will be surely gratifying to every man and woman in the commonwealth. "No one could be more appreciative than I am of the honor which has come to me at the hands of Gover nor Neville. No one will work more sincerely than I will in my efforts to make the citizen soldiers in my com mand fit to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best soldiers of the allied armies. Team Work Needful. "To accomplish this every man in the brigade must contribute his best efforts. A military organization, which is worthy of the name, cannot be created merely by statutes or made efficient wholly by appropriations. There n.ust be team work of the high est order, a willingness to strive tire lessly for tne mutual good. This means the constant cultivation of that fine spirit which dreads no toil and deems rjo obst too great to be surmounted." General Harries had just arrived from New York when he saw The Bee representative at the Army and Navy club. He frankly said his ap pointment as a brigadier general, while not news, was real r . to him until he had met Governor Neville in Washington Monday when the gov ernor handed him his commission. Of course, it is no secret now to say that if General Harries had not re ceived the appointment from Ne braska, he would have received an equal designation at large. Agreeable at Washington. Governor Neville wired General Harries to meet him in Wai Ington, which was done. General Harries, knowing the official life of Washing ton as lie knows Nebraska and its people, be :ame the courier of the gov ernor in his call at the War depart ment and on those officials having charge of thi draft. At the end of a busy half dozen hours Governor Ne ville handed a brigadier general's commission to Harries. "It took my breath away. I could do nothing but accept," said Harries. The commission which General Harries now holds from Nebraska's governor will cease to have any value whatsoever, so far as the troops are Angry Indians Leave Reservation; Threaten War Ely, Nev July 13. Ill feeling which is said to have been smolder ing in the tribe of Indians on the Deep Creek (Utah) reservation since two of their number were ar rested for failure to register June 5 for the selective draft, broke out to night, according to telephone infor. mation received here, when the In dians left the reservation, stole horses and were threatening set tlers along Snake creek. concei ;d on August 4, for on August 5 all National Guard troops will be absorbed by draft from colonc!s down leaving all general officers to a cold and unfeeling world unless the presi dent shauld see fit to nominate these general officers and on confirmation by the senate they will become offi cers of the United States army. There are sixteen division com manders to be nominated and thrtj brigadier commanders for each di vision. These, it is expected, the president vill announce early next week and General George H.'Hsrri??' name will be among those chosen to command the army of democracy. The Nebraska brigade will rendez vous at Ton C ok "' ll be made to those who have no uni forms. They will be given hats, coats, leggins, blankets, belt, rifles and mess kit. They will be vaccinated and given typhoid serum and then will join their brethren from Iowa and the Dakotas somewhere on t" b rdcr for training. Shipping Program Now Settled by President Washington, July 13. The contro versy over the government's shipping program was settled by President Wilson today by directin the emer gency fleet corporation, of which Major General Goethals is manager, to take charge of construction and by authorizing the shipping board to operate the vessels after they are built and to requisition and operate tonnage now on the seas. , The president, by dividing the pow ers conferred on him by congress, cleared the way for an immediate speeding up of construction. Silver Advances Further On Heavy Demands New York, July 13. The continued heavy demand for silver advanced the price today to 80 cents an ounce, the highest in twenty-five years. Both foreign and domestic demand for the nieta! are held responsible for the rise with the explanation today that government preparations to ship sil ver to France in large quantities to pay off American troops nave tended further to lift the market. Norbeck Makes Appointments. Pierre, S. D., July 13. (Special Telegram.) Governor Norbeck this evening reappointed the members of the State Banking board, William Hoese of Spencer, C. H. Lien of Sum mitt and Louis Jacobs of Lennox. Governor Norbeck has selected Dr. H. T. Kenny of this city as chief of the medical staff of the new cavalry regi ment, with rank of major.
