Demand from all sources centered on the more desirable grades of both heavy cattle and yearlings and these In some rases sold at a shade higher prices, choice heavy beeves commanding $13.(5 and best of the yearlings $13.00. Medium and common stuff of sll kinds was rather alow, but not quotable different from the close of last week. Cows and heifers were In limited supply and generally about steady and, there was no material change In the market for stock ers and feeders, both supply and demand being light. Arri vals amounted to 124 cars, or about 8,100 head, being more than 3,000 larger than Monday a week ago and almost 1,000 heav ier than for either two weeks ago, or the corresponding Monday of last year. Receipts of almost 60,000 head at Chicago this morning were the main cause of a sharp break in prices all around the loop. A pretty generous run here gave buyers control of the trade, and they took full ad vantage of the situation, breaking the gen oral market around 20c. The opening was slow and neither ship pars nor packers did much the first hour or so. All buyers started out bidding close to a quarter lower, but both shippers and packers raised their hands on most of the good mixed and butcher weight kinds, and these were the first to sell, moving at fig ures that were In most cases no more than 16c to at the outside 20c lower. The outcome In pro visions ranneil from li'jo decline lo a rise of 16c. Advance guesses regarding the genearl tenor of the goernnteiit crop report a to corn proved correct, but erred In lining too bearish concerning tho slie of the esti mated yield snd as to the condition of the growlh. Private forecast mails the pril:i bla yield 5.140.000,000 bushels lo 5.200.000.000 bushels, whereas the official prediction indi cates 3.154,000,000 bushels. The market was x eakened materially at the outset by tell ing, due lo the embargo notice. Wheat prices receded as a result ot causes similar to those which operated on th ecorn market. Reckonings of what would be shown by the government report turned out to be remarkably accurate. Business re mains meager, however, because of outlook for almost immediate formal control of the market being assumed by federal authorities. Oats averaged lower In sympathy with other grain. The government crop report as to oats wss considerable more In favor ot the bears than had been looked for. Depression In tho hog market weakened provisions.
