Kev. L. Groh Says That Thrift
Is Again Looked on as a
Virtue, as in Olden
Days.
Ministers in many Omaha churches
Sunday preached on conservation of
the country's food supply.
This was done at the request of Her
bert C. Hoover, national food ad
ministrator, who reached nearly all
the ministers of the country last week
through the telephone companies. He
requested the companies to call up
the ministers and make known his de
sire to have the evils of food waste
proclaimed from the pulpits. At least
90 per cent of the ministers promised
to preach on the subject or at least to
mention it in the course of their ser
mons.
The incident in Christ's life wl en
he fed the 5,000 was a favorite text tor
the day. Rev. Dr. L. Groh, pastor
of St. Mark's English Lutheran
churcli, chose this text, laying special
emphasis on the last clause, "And the
disciples gathered up the fragments
that were left.
Gather Up the Fragments.
"They might easily have said, 'We
don't need to gather up the fragments.
The Master can make more bread
when we are hungry as he made this.'
But the important thing is that they
did gather up the fragments and saved
them, said Dr. Groh.
Waste is our great national fault
today. Through years of prosperity
we have come to have a false standard
Those who have mone seek to make
the fact known to their neighbors by
showing how much they can waste.
Honest thrift has come to be looked
on as meanness and stinginess.
When l was a boy, 1 remember.
men would work from sun to sun for
what thev earn in an hour now
Women worked at 25 cents a day. and
it wasn t an eight-hour day either; it
was about a tweive-nour day. ut
course, in those days you could get
a quarter of a carcass of veal for 50
cents and now you pay about that
much for two pounds.
Hives of Industry.
"In those days the farm houses
were busy hives of industry, too. All
through the winter, the spinning
wheels were busy spinning the flax
and weaving the cloth that finally was
made into clothing for the members
of the family.
Of course, we don t want to go
back to the spinning wheel. But we
do need to go back to more ot the
hardy life of industry and thrift. We
need to get rid ot our false standards
of living and adopt standards of
sturdy independence.
"It is astonishing that many of our
people have forgotten so much of
thrift and conservation in the food
and other affairs of everyday life that
they have to teach them these things
now in the coUenes. Nearly every
body knows how to be thrifty anl
this knowledge should be put into
practice, lo be saving, especially in
food, is the highest kind of common
sense. It is wicked to waste and he
who deliberately wastes-is an enemy
of the rest of the people." Deliberate
waste ought fo be looked upon as a
crime. Thrift ought to be honored
highly and thrifty people who are big
enough not to be ashamed of their
thrift ought to be held in highest
esteem."
Iowa Guardsmen Go
Into Active Service
De Moinei, la., July 2. -FW thou
sand recruit members of the Iowa Na
tional Guard went on active duty today-
at their armories all over the
state.
All members of the organization
who did not see service on the Mex
ican border have been assembled for
a period of intensive training prinr
to the federal call.
They will not be mobilized at any
central camp, but small camps will be
estabilshed wherever a Guard unit is
located.
