Is a large one, and the fool things they do are really remarkable.
You possibly do not think you belong to this family, but watch
yourself and see if every day you do not take some fool chance, that, if it does
not result in an accident, you look back and say: "Well, that's lucky!"
Falling down stairs is one of the most prolific sources of accidents, both in the
shop and in the, home. It will surprise many to know that 1150 people were
killed, and more than 4,000 crippled last year from this cause.
It takes less effort to be careful and keep yourself from falling than
to pick yourself up. The same applies to getting on and off street cars
Gf the street car accidents are caused by some member of the "Take a Chance
Family" not using his "Think Tank," jumping off or getting on before the car
stops. A great many accidents are caused by either the high-heeled shoe,
when the edge of the heel catches and trips the wearer into a fall, or by the
run-down heels of the shoes. There is a perfectly safe way to get on and off
street cars or to come down stairs. Hang on to the rail and plant your feet
firmly on each step. If you wear skirts, lift-them.
Falling from ladders and other places caused two and a half times as many ac
cidents last year as occurred on railroads. We know a painter in the car shops
of a railroad company, who, instead of getting a ladder, thought he would use
a broken box which stood near. The box caved in, of course. He scratched
his leg on a rusty nail. Blood poisoning set in and he died. A perfectly good
ladder was leaning against'the next car in the shops at the time, but he was
too lazy to get it. A member of the "Take-a-Chance family" driving a 30-H.-P.
automobile took a chance on beating -a railroad train to the crossing. He
beat it by 30 seconds. Accidents do not just happen. Nothing "just hap
pens." For every result there is a cause. Safety First is just being-reasonable
and fair to yourself and others.
