Dan Is First Dog to Enlist in
Omaha Ambulance Dog Corps
"Dan" McCaffery enlisted yesterday
in the Omaha ambulance company's
dog corps. "Dan" leaves a good home
and a nice family, but he is willing to
sacrifice both, and if need be, to die
for his country.
"Dan" has faced detfth before. In
fact, he failed in an attempt at suicide
one afternoon last summer. His home
has been at 2-102 South Tenth street,
which is also the home of Mrs. C. S.
McCaffrey and family. When Mrs.
McCaffrey administered a gentle
switching to "Dan" ope day last sum
mer for thoughtlessly scratching the
floor, "Dan" was seized with an un
conquerable fit of melancholy. The
Riverview Park-Farnam street cars
pass in front of "Dan's" home, and
out on the street car tracks he sought
relief.
Life wasn't worth living any longer.
The switching didn't hurt so much,
but gee, look who hit him. So
stretched flat across the tracks he re
fused to move as the street car bore
down upon him. By dint of laborious
effort the motorman was able tp bring
the car to a stop in time to savd the
dog's life.
Even then the dog refused to rise.
Physical force was brought to bear
on him and before the second car had
arrived "Dan" had gotten over his de
spondency and changed his mind.
"Dan" is a well framed shepherd
dog and will doubtless be used to
good advantage by the ambulance
company. According to Art McCaf
frey, "Dan's" principal value lies in
the fact that he can carry almost any
thing small with safety. Art takes
him to the store every time the order
looks a little to big for Art to handle.
"Dan" has often been sent home
alone from the store with a sack of
cookies. ' '
Equestrian Figure Carved
From Ivory Shown by Combs
An equestrian figure carved from
ivory, the horse not an inch in length,
is attracting attention in the show
window of the jewelry store of T. L.
Combs, 1S20 Douglas street. The fig
ure is mounted under a glass crystal.
It is the property of W. L. Dickel,
formerly of New York, now of
Omaha. It is carved to represent his
father, now deceased, William C.
Dickel, mounted on his favorite horse.
It is the endless detail in the carv
ing and finishing that attracts atten
tion in this little piece of work. Mr.
Dickel says a Mexican carved it by
hand under a magnifying glass.
Every muscle of the horse is visible.
Little gold buckles are seen on the
bridle and even little gold spurs are
detectable. The man is gently touch
ing the flank of the horse with a
whip, which is as delicate as the fin
est human eyelash, yet it is perfect.
It has a gold handle, and is brought
out in such relief that with a magni
fying glass one can actually see llic
shadow of the whip on the flank of
the horse.
Patriotic Celebration
At Ralston on Fourth
Ralston will observe the Fourth
with a patriotic celebration morning,
afternoon and evening.
The program starts at 10 a. m. with
a ball game between the Howard
Stove company and the Ralston Fur
niture company. At 11:15 horse races,
potato races, sack races, long man's
races, women's nail driving contests
and other sport events will be held.
At noon a basket dinner will be
served in the grove. In the evening
there will be a balloon ascension and a
platform dance. The afternoon pro
gram is as follows:

Hoover to Use ttie Movies
For Food Conservation Work
Herbert C. Hoover, food dictator ot
the nation, has decided to use the
"movies" as a means of placing be
fore the housewives of the country his
ideals on food conservation.
The "movies" did such good work
in placing before the public .the need
of subscribing to Liberty loan bonds
that it is thought the government will
use this means of publicity with
marked success.

Fast Gaining Public Favor
That the efforts of Joseph H.
Keenan, manager of the Hcnsfiaw
hotel, to privide summer entertain
ment and a musical review of unusual
merit is appreciated by the people of
Omaha is evidenced by the fact that
the big dining room at the hotel is
filled every night "Although the
company of entertainers have been
here only ten days, they have made
many friends and have a large follow
ing of the discriminating people of
this city," said Mr, Keenan. "The
company is composed of high class
entertainers secured from vaudeville,
Chautauqua and we'll known bands.
For instance, Clinton Harson, leader
of the orchestra, was recently with
Arthur Pryor's band; he is the man
who makes the saxophone talk. Larry
Ball, tenor, came from the Orphcum;
Jule Jose, that Spanish girl doing
character, and Edith Welch, the vio
linist, have been doing chautauqua
work for several seasons. All down
the list they are artists of ability,
furnishing refined entertainment and
dance music that is hard to equal."
The entertainment and dances start
every evening at 6 o'clock, and on
Wednesday and Saturday afternoons
from 4 to 5:30 o'clock.
Business Girls Invited
To Y. W. Camp for Fourth
An invitation to all business girls to
spend, their Fourth of July at the
Young Men'a Christian Association
summer camp has been extended by
the young women tof that camp, and
j romise all who come to the "Camp
fire Encampment" a day full of girls'
sports.
An interesting program of games
and stunts has been planned for the
special celebration. ' The program will
begin at sunrise with the raising and
saluting of the flag, followed by a
hike through the woods for a visit
to Dr. Bob Gilder's studio and the pre
historic hounds.
A chicken dinner will be served at
noon, tennis and volley bafl will be
played in the afternoon and a picnic
and stunt party given fn the evening.
The summer camp girls are planning
a nine days' encampment from June
30 to July 9. Working girls may come
for any part of this encampment.
South Side Sokol Band
Plays at Mandan Park
The South Side Sokol band, directed
by L. Kaspar, will offer a municipal
concert this afternoon in Mandan
park, South Side, beginning at 2:20.
Several patriotic numbers will be ren
dered. '

For the Automobile Races on the afternoon of July 4th, through service from 14th
and Howard direct to the Speedway will be maintained. There will also be extra serv
ice from 16th and Locust, as the travel may demand. Cars to Speedway will carry
'signs reading: "Take this car to Speedway."
CELEBRATION Fontenelle Park
From business district, take any street car going north on 14th Street. These
cars will carry signs reading "42d and Grand" or "24th and Ames." Extra' service
from 24th and Ames Avenue, as travel may demand.
School for the Deaf cars also go within a few blocks of the Park.
LAKEVIEW Omaha's Newest Amusement Park
From business district take any street car going north on 14th Street and trans
fer at 16th and Locust to Carter Lake cars.
We will endeavor to furnish ample service to take care of the crowd. As a mat
ter of fact, we will have all of our available cars put into service. But we take this
means of asking our patrons to co-operate with us to make the service as safe and com-
fortable as possible.
Passengers can greatly facilitate the service, besides adding to their own comfort,
if all do not try to board the first car that comes along. Do not hang on an over
crowded car it's too dangerous. Take the next one. And do not attempt to board
or alight from a moving car.
