failed to hit them in.
Thompson singled in the seventh

Gibbs, professional of Union City,
Tenn., won high score honors in the
tri-state trap shooting tournament,
. which ended here today by breaking
394 targets out of a possible 400 in the
two days of registered events. George
schmidt, Memphis, topped the ama
teurs with a total score of 38J.
A feature of today's events was the
perfect shooting of a squad composed

Two Aleged Slackers
.' In Jail at Beatrice
Beatrice, Neb., June 29. (Special.)
Two strangers were arrested in a
'tarn she miles north of Beatrice last
veiling by Sheriff Acton and lodged
in jail tor failure to register under the
-' telective draft on June 5. The men
gave their names as Wallace Brown
and John Smith and claim Kansas
City as their home, Farmers who saw
them enter the barn early in the eve
ning, presumably to spend the night
there, notified the officer, who placed
!hem under arrest. They will be held
pending an investigation. ,
Five Men Enlist in
- U. S. Army at Beatrice
Beatrice, Neb., June 29. (Special.)
Sergeant Ketter, who has had
charge of the regular army recruit
ing station'here, was transferred to
Mason City, la., yesterday. He will
be succeeded by Sergeant Orleans.
Five young men enlisted in the infan
try service of the regular army here
resterday. They are Clyde B. Ellis,
Hafry C Batten. William F. Riggs,
Herbert F. Scheideler of Wymore
and Frank G. With of Odell.
Celebration on Fourth.
. Red Cloud, Neb., June 29. (Spe
cial.) Arrangements nave been com
pleted for the big Fourth of July cele
bration and Red Cross day. Chief Jus
tice A. M. Morrissey of the supreme
court is to be the speaker o( the day.
One of the big features ill be a his
torical pageant depicting the history
of Nebraska. An automobile parade
is also on the program. ' Music will
be furnished bv the Lebanon and Red
Clond and by 'the chorus of fifty
voices.

is being held by the chief of police

SPEED DEMONS HIT

Lewis, Burt and Mason
Throw on Speed in Prac
tice at Speedway.
Joe Thomas, Walter Haines, Baby
Pete Henderson, Dave Lewis, Andy
Burt and Jerry Mason were some of
the speed artists who gave their steel
steeds short workout3 on the speed
way yesterday.
All turned some fast laps on the
mile and a quarter oval. Thomas clip
ped off several laps in 43:1 and 43:2,
an average of 103 miles an hour. Lewis
in his Hoskins Special circled the sau
cer in 44.1 one trip. This is an aver
age of 102 mites an hour.
Henderson and Haines turned sev
eral laps at speeds 'ranging from ninety-eight
to 100 miles an hour without
any trouble, while Burt and Mason
had no difficulty in scaling the high
pitched turns at rapid gaits.
Baby Pete made the eyes of the
other drivers pop out when he began
to circle the oval. Baby Pete learned
the trick of t,be local speedway from
Eddie Rickenbacher and he drives it
like a top. Some of the other drivers
who had never before tried out the
track encountered difficulty and it was
something of a revelation for them to
see the ease with which Pete sailed in
and out of the curves.
Trials Start Today.
Elimination trials start this after
noon at 2 o'clock. They also will be
held Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
afternoons.
Each driver is given three oppor
tunities to mark his car. Positions at
the start of the Independence day race
depend upon the speed made in the
eliminations. The car turning the
fastest lap is given first position, the
second fastest Second position and
so on.
This year the eliminations wilt elim

of the world," has entered two cars
in the Omaha sreedwsy races July 4
The entries were received by Contest
Director K I. Mcshane today.
Barney's machines both are called
Oldfield Specials, One is his famous
"Golden Ekh." the car with the peri
scope and the covered body, which
barney Beclares will prevent any ac
cident to its occupants no matter
what may happen to the car. The
other car is the machine Cliff Dur
rant famous millionaire "kid" from
the Pacific coast, drives.
Oldfield is carded to clash with
Ralph De Palm in a match race at
Detroit Sunday. Last Sunday Barney
ran away from De, Palma in three
match races at Milwaukee. De Palma
wants revenge in his home town, and
Barney agreed to give him a chance.
Oldfield will ship to Omaha from
Detroit Sunday night directly after
the race. His car will arrive Tuesday
morning and Barney wired he would
be ready to qualify that day and race
Wednesday.
