harvesting had begun In Kansas acted as a
bearish factor today In the wheat market.
Prices, although steady at the close, were
lo net lower, with July at $2.09 and Sep
tember, $1.84. Corn finished 2tto to $t4
down, oats unchanged ta $ off and
provisions at a decline of 8676o.
Several places in Kansas reported that
cutting of wheat was In progreaa and there
were also advices that new wheat from
Oklahoma was arriving at St. Louis. The
bear side of the market was xavored by
measagea from Washington that amend
ments to the food control bill had been
agreed to which would lessen opposition
to tne measure. At first tne maruet had
shown a temporary rlspositloa to harden,
owing apparently to some renewal of un
certainty as to the outcome of food legls-
atlon. Bullish reports mat tarmera in
Texas were binning moat of their wheat as
soon as It was thrashed also bad been given
considerable notice.

harvest is on and the yield is heavy.

Big Patriotic Meetings.
The big drive is on to recruit the
South Side company for the Sixth
regiment. Patriotic meetings will be
held at the packing houses Wednesday
and J nursday noon, and ward meet
ings will be held in town Wednesday
and Thursday evenings. Deputy
County treasurer J. J. Hmchev is
asking for volunteer speakers and
autos to take them around to the va
rioiu meeting places. Those who will
assist in this way are asked to report

Jones is Fined.
Walter Jones, 1612 North Twentv-
fourth street, the colored man who
was arrested for annoying Miss Nellie
tiuttingcr. was lined S1UU and costs
in police court this morning by Judge
Glenn R. Moran, who told the pris
oner he deserved more, but that was
the limit allowed by law. Jones
couldn't produce the cash, therefore
will work for the city forty-five day,
for disturbing the peace, Another
charge awaits him at the termination
of his sentence assault and battery
and resisting an officer.
Money for Red Cross.
Two branches of the Armour & Co.
Red Cross organization, the first aid
class and the hospital supply class,
have through their own efforts raised
$240 which is to be donated to the
central organization.
Lntertainments given bv the iirst
aid class netted $141: $100 was raised
at a dance by the hospital supply class
and $50 was taken in by the Armour
Glee club, which was also given to the
Hospital supply class. Comfort kits
and a cupply of bandages are now on
hand, being made under the super
vision of Mrs. J. P. Wrath. Miss Lily
Ring is chairman of the hospital
supply class, and Dr. R. E. Schindel
is leader of the first aid class.
The members of these classes will
soon be ready for their first aid exam

He gave his name as Tim Jackson,
age 30 years, and his birth place as
Cleveland, O. The prisoner had ap
parently severed relations with the
barber's union long before war was
declared, and although the weather
registered high heat, he was fortified
against any sudden change by several
trousers, coats and woolen shirts.

Trip to Den.
Lowering clouds, flashing fiery
teeth had no terrors for the Sarpy
county crowds, who were scheduled
for the initiation at Ak-Sar-Bcn Den
last night.
They came in spite of the threaten
ing weather and the storm that seem
ed certain to conic. They came 700
strong from Papillion, from Gretna,
from Springfield, from Bellevue.
They came in automobiles too, the?
vast majority of them until the
grounds around the den looked like
a veritable ant hill of touring cars.
About 150 came by train, and 100 by
the interurhan line. The rest came in
autos. They were on time, too, for
they knew the show was theirs for
that one night, and they wanted to be
prompt to show their appreciation.
Praise For the King.
Charley Hlack presided, following
the show and inflation. He introduced
Ernest Ruff of Papillion, and 11. K.
Secord of Gretna, who spoke brielly
in praise of Ak-Sar-Iien and in ap
preciation of the entertainment that
is thus annually furnished, the live
ones of the neighboring country.
The show is still improving. New
features are being added, and others
are being eniivencd. The initiation is
also getting more pep. Stanley P.
Conover last night took the part of
Sandy Haig, in place of Charley
Docherty, who mingled among the
audience looking at the show from
the reserved seat section just to get
the most sdvantageous point from
which to criticize it and also to gather
ideas from among the audience.
Near beer was served for the first
time.

night.
Horse Pulling Part I
of Farmers' Picnic
The Farmers' Educational and Co
operative State union, which com
prises over 400 farmers in the district
of Florence, and Benson, will give a
gigantic picnic on August 11 if pre
sented plans of the union are car
ried out.
Dancing, racing and horse pulling
will feature the picnic, while there
will he all kinds of eatables on hand
for the picnickers. The union con
sists of five different locals and is an
organization built up for the mutual
benefit of the farmers.
