The Chicken Business
The chicken business is no place for the
untrained or unread man or woman. It's
simple but there's lots to know and a wrong
path leads surely to disaster. Little use to
seta hundred eggs, hatch fifty, raise twenty
have these grow up unthrifty and the hens
lay perhaps fifty eggs a year.
The Lee Library of five booklets was writ
ten by an expert of thirty years' experience
in poultry work. It tells about Lee's foods,
insecticides and remediestrue; but it ia
more than an "ad." It points out the stum
bling blocks, the little pitfalls that cause so
many failures with poultry.
We show how eggs can b made 90 per
cent fertile; 90 per cent or better hatched;
90 per cent of these raised; every normal
hen made W lay fifteen eggs per month
every month in the year, and summer eggs
preserved absolutely fresh for winter sale
or use; then thcra's big money in chickens.
Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate)
That is, on the whole, the most use
ful poultry yard drug. It should be
given whenever there is any diges
tive disturbance, also where cases of
colds and bowel trouble are preva
lent. The standard dose for ail adult
fowl is from one-half to one teaspoon
ftil. Birds of different ages require
different" amounts to the dose. There
are several ways to administering Ep
som salts. It may be mixed with the
drinking water or a solution may be
made and poured down the throat of
the bird. The best way to administer
a dose to the entire fiock is to give
the birds no food whatever on the
day they are to be given the Epsom
salts until late in the afternoon, then,
having determined the amount of
salts to be used for the whole pen
of birds at the rate of one-half to one
teaspoonful per bird, dissolve this
amount jn water anduse this solu
tion to mix up a wet inash. Any or
dinary dry-mash mixture of bran,
cornmeal, middlings, etc., may be
used for this purpose. Plenty of
trough space should be provided and
plenty of feed given so that each
bird gets a full dose. This method
insures a more even dosage through
the flock than any other. It may be
also fed in the drinking water, one
teaspoonful to the quart.
Cottonseed Oil (salad oil) This
is useful in many ways in treating
prolapse of the oviduct (dropped ab
domen), crop-bound condition and in
other cases such as where the fowl
is egg-bound. The oil may be lised
to good cttect as a simple lubricant.
Bichloride of Mercury (1 to 1,000
solution) To make this the simplest
way is to buy from the druggist bi
chloride of 'mercury tablets and ask
' him to label the box to show how
much water a tablet must be dissolved
in to make 1 to 1,000 solution. The
amount is one pint. If one desires
to mix it up for himself ask the drug
gist to make up some one-gram (15)4
grains) powders of bichloride of mer
cury. Dissolve one of these in a
quart of water. Put in enough laun
dry bluing so that the color will be
deep blue, then the solution (which is
highly poisonous) will never be taken
for water. This solution is a germi
cide and -i disinfectant for external
use, such as cleansing wounds, etc.
Medicine in Tablet Form The
tablet form is the most convenient
way of administering medicines to
chickens. Wholer le and mail order
drug houses carry extensive lines of
these, graded as to dosage. They
may be administered to the chicken
very easily by holding the bird's
mouth open and with one Hand drop
ping the tablet into the esophagus.
The following list will be found use
ful and fairly well covers the medi
cines often recommended for use in
the treatment of ooultrv ailments.

Sodium salicylate (for use in rheu
matism) three grains, 70 cents;
aconite root, one to ten grains, for
use in fevers, 50 cents; antiseptic
tablets, blue, corrosive sublimate, 7.3
grains; ammonium chloride, 7.7 '
grains. (This is used for making 1
to 1,000 bichloride. One tablet dis
solved in one pint of water gives a
solution of that strength). $2.50.
Bismuth subnitrate, one grain (for
intestinal irritation), 80 cents; calo
mel, one-fourth grain, 40 cents; iron,
quinine and strychnine (for use as a
tonic, dose three times per day), 80
cents.
Ointment The following oint
ment may be made by the poultry
man, and will be found very useful
in the treatment of cuts, sores,
wounds, etc.: Oil of origanum, one
ounce; cresol, three-fourths ounce;
pine tar, one ounce; resin, one ounce;
clean axle grease, eight ounces. Melt
the axle grease and resin and stir in
the other-ingredients. Pour off in a
tin can and allow to cool.
