Bearish Government Crop Report Causes
, Activity In Chicago Wheat Pit.
ChlcHgo, June $. Aithougn ultra bearish
forecasts of the government crop report
caused the wheat market to average lower
today, prices rallied In the last half hour
to an extent which has perhaps discounted
the fact that the official estimate of the
winter crop proved to be too pessimistic as
judged by a majority of traders. - The
market closed unsettled at the same as yes-
lernay s nmsn to x i-i advance, witn July
at l-'.ii and Sept. at $1.96. Corn gained 8
l-K to I 1-2 net. and oats 1-8 to 3-8 Pro-
'Visions wound up unchanged to 20c higher.
.Until the last half hour of the session the
wneat market had a decided downward
slant owing largely to predictions that the
government estimate of yield for this sea--
son would total as much as 60,000,000
bushels mon than In 1916. whereas the ac
tual figures received from Washington after
the close put the probable gain over last
year at only 1(1, 000,000 bushels. Late
strength In the wheat market came about
cniefiy as a result or a not a me bulge in the
advance Of com.
Export demand made the corn market
soar. The Atlantic seaboard was an active
bidder and there also were advices of bus!
ness for Europe having been done by way
of the Gulf 'of Mexico. Besides, domestic
country offerings were light and it was said
no accumulation was likely at any of the
leading terminal points for at least a week
yet while farmers were trying to counter
balance. "

Cattle Receipts were very larae for a
Friday, in 'act the largest that they have
been for a long time for that day. The big
run was due to the arrival of several trains
that had boen leaded for Wednesday's or
Thursday's market but had been delayed
by high water. By reaHon of the over-
supply this late In the week the trade was
very slow 10 as much as 10c and m some
cases possibly 16r lower than yesterday. The,
decline for the two days Is around 26o on
the general run of common to pretty decent
kinds, the loss being especially notlcable on
