Wheat advanced sharnly today, owing In the main to the fact that hedging sales or the new crop have been scarce. The market clossd firm, 4c to 9o higher, with July at $2.16 and September at $1.95. Corn finished lo off to a like ad vance, oats down o to o and provisions at 20c to 45o decline. In addition to the scantiness of hedging. a bullish factor as to wheat was the cir cumstance that stocks were shown to be unusually meager at all western terminal points. A good increase of the United States visible supply total appeared, but the gains were entirely at export centers. Absence of hedging was accounted for by reports that the ripening of the new crop In the southwsst seemed to be fully ten days late. The quality and by a material enlargement of yield. Trading as a whole proved too restricted in volume to allow or tnucn. sig nificance being generally attached to the flighty changes In quotations. Corn shorts found themselves badly squeezed at one time today. Favorable weather had led to free speculative selling and when attempts were made to even up for tomorrow's holiday, the market bulged about 8a above Saturday's finish, showing a gain in some cases of as mucn as i&c within a week. Reports Indicating unusual llahtness of country reserve stocks hantli caped the hears, but commission houses be came active sellers on the upturn and the market closed with most of the advance wined out. Sentiment as to oats waa very bearish as a result of continued favorable crop re ports. Some export business was said to have been done at tne aeaooarn. Lararer reoelnts of hogs than expected weakened the provision market. Foreign advices wera not encouraging holders and exports for the week were materially under the corresponding total a year ago.
